Why Buc-ee's Still Won't Come to Michigan Despite Expanding Across the Midwest

However, despite strong demand from Michigan fans, the Texas-based travel center still has no plans to build in the state. LANSING, Mich. While Buc-ee's continues its rapid expansion across the Midwest, Michigan is once again being left off the map.

According to MLive, Buc-ee's is opening or planning new locations in eight states during 2026 and 2027. Ohio opened its first Buc-ee's in Huber Heights in April 2026, where the company reportedly generated more than $1 million in opening-day sales and nearby hotels sold out for the weekend. Wisconsin is expected to receive its first location in Oak Creek by early 2027, and Indiana is also being considered for future expansion.

Michigan, however, is nowhere on the list.

The Detroit Free Press reported on June 25, 2026, that Buc-ee's has no plans to build a location in Michigan. That news disappointed many fans who had hoped a mysterious billboard along I-96 near Lowell in 2024 hinted at a future Michigan store. Instead, the billboard simply reminded drivers that the nearest Buc-ee's was more than 400 miles away in Kentucky.

The likely reason comes down to Buc-ee's business model. The company typically builds its massive travel centers at major interstate crossroads with heavy cross-country traffic. Michigan, as a peninsula, serves primarily as a destination state, with most travelers either beginning or ending their trip here instead of simply passing through.

That makes Michigan a less attractive fit for Buc-ee's signature travel centers, which often feature more than 120 fuel pumps and stores covering roughly 70,000 square feet.

For now, Michigan fans craving Beaver Nuggets, fresh brisket and Buc-ee's famous snacks will have to make the drive to Ohio or another neighboring state.
