Michigan Issues Statewide Air Quality Alert as Wildfire Smoke Moves Across the State

Michigan health and environmental officials are urging residents to limit prolonged outdoor activity as heavy wildfire smoke moves across the state, creating poor air quality and reduced visibility. A statewide Air Quality Alert remains in effect through Thursday, with forecasters warning that smoke concentrations could reach some of the highest levels typically seen in Michigan.

According to the National Weather Service, the smoke is coming from wildfires burning in Minnesota's Superior National Forest and parts of southern Canada. Unlike previous wildfire smoke events that primarily affected northern Michigan, northwesterly winds are carrying the smoke directly into West Michigan, while stable weather conditions are expected to trap the smoke close to the ground.

Forecasters expect the thickest smoke to arrive Wednesday evening and continue through Thursday, with the worst conditions expected during the day Thursday. In addition to reducing visibility, the smoke is expected to significantly impact air quality across much of the state. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is encouraging residents to monitor local air quality reports and reduce strenuous outdoor activities, especially children, older adults, and people with asthma or other respiratory conditions.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is continuing to monitor conditions and has indicated the Air Quality Alert could be extended into Friday if smoke remains over the region. Officials recommend staying indoors when possible, keeping windows closed, and using air conditioning or air filtration systems if available until air quality improves.

The Question: Has the wildfire smoke affected the air quality or visibility where you live in Michigan today?
