Topic: How to make kids smarter

I'm pretty sure good nutrition, the right toys, and proper parenting help kids do better in school. I think we're severely laking in all 3 of these in Flint.

Boosting intelligence among poor is child's play

LONDON (Reuters) - Giving pre-school children toys to play with boosts their mental development even if they suffer from malnutrition, a report said on Friday.

The report, published in the Lancet medical journal, said several studies had found a clear link between intelligence and child's play.

"We have done play programs in Bangladesh where the children are severely malnourished and we have produced up to a nine-point improvement in the IQ of these kids -- just with play," said author Sally McGregor of the Institute of Child Health at University College London.

"Malnutrition on its own is a problem. Malnutrition without mental stimulation is an even bigger problem," she said in an interview.

The report found that more than 200 million of the world's poorest children were underfed and under-stimulated.

It said 89 million of the most neglected children lived in south Asia, while 145 million were divided among India, Nigeria, China, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Tanzania.

Simple intervention at the lowest level by governments and aid agencies to change attitudes and encourage pre-school play at home, as well as basic nutrition, could have a major effect, researchers concluded.

"People are focused on reducing mortality. But they haven't realized that so many children are not reaching their potential," said McGregor. "But by the time they reach five or six and go to school their chances are almost blown."

McGregor said that, in studies in Jamaica, villagers with no secondary education themselves were sent into homes with home-made toys to teach mothers how play with their children.

"We followed the children up to 18 years of age and their IQ is better, their reading is better, they are less likely to drop out of school and their mental health is better -- they are less depressed, less anxious and have better self-esteem," she said.

"There is a lot of ignorance about what a child needs -- they think that play is not for adults and they don't understand that they can improve the child's development," she added.

You're missing a huge factor here. "Poor" in America is NOT the same as "Poor" in the rest of the world (Bangladesh.) Have you ever seen a single American that is starving? The 'poorest' people in America are the fattest people in America and continue to reproduce at a higher rate than the middle class or working class. In all honesty, there is NO SUCH thing as "poor" in America (the World Health Organization defines extreme poverty as surviving on the equivalent of $1 per day or less). "Poor" in america is a pseudonym for "missed opportunity"

Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for the kids born to such apathetic, lazy, uneducated and underachieving families (it's not the kids fault) But let's break the cycle by placing more responsiblity and accountability on the parents (actually - "single unwed mother" and "irresponsible sperm donor" would be a better description that "parent")

There still is a nutrition issue in america. You can have a fat rich kid with bad nutrition. I've read online that eating healthy (fruits and vegetables) can make you smarter. Have you ever heard that fish is brain food? There's also been a test case where a school in NY switched to natural foods and the school improved. At Davison most kids just eat fries and pop and maybe a slice of pizza or something like that. Most kids in America's schools do not eat many fruits and vegetables. It's strange that we give kids pop that is so loaded with sugar it needs acid added to it to be able to drink and we wonder why kids can't sit still. I've heard our diabetes rate is headed for 50%.

You must fly only in counter-clockwise circles. That's because you only seem to have a right wing!

There's not even any point trying to discuss this issue with you because you're incapable of imagining the huge number of people who are starving... YES, STARVING... in this country.

The right wingers restricted people's ability to have residential mental health care. Some of those people are starving. They are ill, not lazy.

Some people are thrust into extreme poverty due to accident, a spouse's death, or any number of reasons that are not their fault.

Many people take no action to make their situation better because they simply don't know where to go, or got tired of being turned away due to a lack of available aid, or are barely over an income level that would allow them to receive aid.

But, yeah, you just go ahead and keep flying around in your one-directional circle. The rest of us will carry your burden. After all, you need to spend all of your time thinking you're better than other people....

Please give me the name of one person or show me a picture of one person who is starving in this country as a result of lack of available calories? I repeat, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS POOR IN THIS COUNTRY. JUST MISSED OPPORTUNITY.

If that inflames you, so be it. I feel very sad for the people who are struggling for "any number of reasons that aren't their fault" But for everyone of those, I'll show you 10 lazy, unemployable, baby-making leeches.

The truth hurts........and until we're willing to look at the true roots of the lower socio-economic populace and candidly address them rationally, we'll just keep enouraging our current custodial state. (I say rationally b/c I've tried to be part of group discussions on this topic before and it always turns to name calling and finger pointing and absolutely nothing constructive)-----> kind of like you were just doing by calling me a right-wing freak)

Dear Guest,

First, please notice that no one called anyone a right wing freak. So, the statement that someone did is untrue.

Second, please note the hostility in the comments that Independant voter was replying to. It seems as if the hostility started on "the right."

Third, the arguement about give me a name or show me a photo is what's known as a false arguement, it offers no proof. Also, when you claimed to have 10 names, etc for every one given of someone who's starving you made, well- actually- several false arguements.

I can understand how some people might get frustrated when discuss matters with you.

I do give them credit, though, for showing you the kindess they did in making you feel that your input in the conversation had value. Wink

That's all fine and dandy and your response is typical and expected (addressing me and not the issues)

So, I'll restate the issues:

1. There is no such thing as "poor" in America relative to the rest of the world. Only missed opportunity.

2. The "poorest" people in this country are the fattest. This is offensive and disgusting.

Your turn.
