City starts nonprofit foundation to help raise money for Flint police

FLINT, MI -- Flint city leaders are hoping to raise extra money to support the police department with a new nonprofit foundation that will solicit donations from local business leaders and community members.

Emergency Manager Darnell Earley announced the creation of the Flint Police Foundation during a Friday, Feb. 28, press conference at Flint City Hall.

"This foundation will search out potential donors of cash and equipment for the Flint Police Department," Earley said.

The city agreed to pay Southfield-based Chiddister & Associates $9,000 to start the foundation. Earley said plans call for the $9,000 starting cost to be reimbursed once the foundation begins raising money.

"The creation of this foundation and the work that comes from it will be a tremendous benefit to the Flint Police Department, its officers and, ultimately, the city of Flint," Earley said.

Max Chiddister, president of Chiddister & Associates, said the city will have input on the organization's bylaws and code of ethics but the foundation will be independent once it is up and running.

"Once it's established, the foundation is autonomous from the city," Chiddister said.

The foundation would work by raising funds and then approving grants petitioned by Flint police Chief James Tolbert.

"We want to make sure the community is engaged and knows our wants and needs," Tolbert said. "If there's anything out there that can assist us in doing that job, it's important that we get that with the community."

Flint Mayor Dayne Walling said the foundation is an opportunity for the city to build stronger relationships between its police staff and community members.

"The new Flint Police Foundation is another way for the community to be involved in supporting public safety efforts here in the city," Walling said.

City voters previously approved a $5.3 million public safety millage that city leaders touted as a way to support Flint fire and police personnel.

Board members have not yet been appointed to the foundation.
