Church funeral for Flint homicide victim turns deadly; former councilman says city has "heart problem"
By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com
FLINT, MI -- What was supposed to be a funeral for the last homicide victim of 2012, turned deadly on Saturday afternoon, according to police.
Flint police Chief Alvern Lock said police were called to Full Gospel Christian Church on King Avenue near Home Avenue about 2:20 p.m. Jan. 12 and found a man shot to death just outside the church sanctuary.
The gunman fled the scene and still is at large, Lock said.
It was a frantic scene as police blocked off Martin Luther King Avenue between Home and Gracelawn. Mourners weren't let out of the church until they were interviewed, Lock said.
Witnesses said shots rang out at the beginning of the service.
"Everybody got on the floor," said Darrin Laury, 43, of Flint. "Everybody was getting under the pews."
Dewayne Patton, 48, of Flint Township said he was standing near the back of the church when he heard a gunshot and yelled for everyone to get down.
"It's a just a shame," said Patton. "I know back in the day when I was growing up, we never had anything like this."
Police have not released the name of the man slain Saturday.
Meanwhile, family of the man whose funeral was being held were upset that violence happened at a funeral.
"It's crazy because my cousin can't even be buried the proper way," said Bennie Johnson, whose cousin Gerrell Tyler was shot to death in Flint on Dec. 30, becoming the city's record-tying 66th homicide.
Johnson said he didn't hear any shots inside the church Saturday but said someone yelled for everyone to get down.
It is unclear if Saturday's slaying is related to Tyler's homicide, said Lock.
"No one expects to come to a funeral and see someone shot," said Lock.
Melvin Tyler said his cousin Gerrell “wasn’t carrying guns or nothing” on the streets or have any real enemies.
“I didn’t even know my cousin was gone,” said Melvin. “He didn’t mess with anybody, he didn’t do nothing.”
Gerrell Tyler;s cousin Shauntele Clay-Johnson, said she was in the front of the church during the shooting and called the situation “crazy.”
“It’s crazy and something really needs to happen in Flint,” she said. “I’m still in shock that somebody came and did that at a funeral… in church.”
Delrico Loyd, former 1st Ward Councilman, wasn't at Saturday' funeral but he attended school as a child with Gerrel Tyler at Flint Northwestern and was shaken by Saturday’s events.
“It’s one of the saddest things I’ve heard happening in the church in my life,” he said. “That’s not something people can stop. We have a heart problem here in Flint.”
Loyd said the problems with violence “may be people didn’t have family in the home, maybe because they went through unemployment.”
Having dealt with several people dying from violent crimes in his family, including a half-brother, Loyd said a change is needed in people before anything else will have an impact.
“Had a police officer been in that church, they still would have shot that person,” he said. “When people don’t even respect pastors, what does that tell you? Police presence is fine, jobs are fine, but we have a heart problem.
Loyd, an associate pastor at North Star Missionary Baptist Church in Flint, pointed towards his faith in stating “Until they find refuge in something positive, and not violence, we will continue to have this problem.”
Part of the issue Loyd said struck a nerve with him during his time on City Council was voices during meeting saying “Everybody focuses on the city council needs to do this, the mayor needs to do this. What are the people doing?”
He noted the situation could have been even more traumatic inside the church, with Loyd noting “There were pastors, singers, kids, and for someone to shoot inside the church, you know things are bad when we don’t respect the church anymore.”
“It was sad that he was murdered, but even worse that the family can grieve during the funeral in piece,” Loyd said. “It’s just a sad situation, and until the heart of the community is healed, we’ll continue to have, unfortunately we can only expect things to get worse.”
Scott Kincaid, Flint City Council President, said an open discussion needs to take place on the issue of guns with different people in on the talk.
"It needs to start with the leaders and family members talking about what do we need to do stop gun violence," he said. "It’s hard to stop a homicide. Police officers -- no matter how many you have on the street -- can’t prevent a homicide."
Kincaid at least one step needed in curbing violence is "better communication with family members and people about gun violence."
"This is just a horrific terrible incident to have happen during a funeral service inside a church," he said. "It’s terrible."
Patton just shook his head when he was talking about the incident.
"The family is already grieving, it's like pouring salt on their wounds," he said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Flint police at 810-237-6801 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-800-422-JAIL.

This murder has all of the blogs jumping.,
First victim was Ray-Rays brother , then not Ray-rays brother.
Firs a pregnant woman miscarried because of the violence and then she was just kicked in the stomach during the rush.
Latest is victim's street name is "Blinky" and he was Merrill Hood".
Motive allegedly is retaliation. He shot at and allegedly killed others.
Don't blink-facts may change in a heartbeat! |

Flint police searching grounds at Evergreen Regency Townhomes for clues in shooting death
By Roberto Acosta | racosta1@mlive.com
on January 13, 2013 at 8:29 PM, updated January 13, 2013 at 8:30 PM
FLINT, MI -- Police are combing over the grounds Sunday evening at Evergreen Regency Townhomes following the city's latest shooting death.
Flint Police Lt. Marcus Mahan confirmed one man was shot to death, but few other details were available in regards to the cause of the shooting or the victim.
Officers were called to the 2100 block of Fox Circle around 6:45 p.m. for a person down and unresponsive on the ground outside one of the townhouse buildings.
A Michigan State Police K-9 unit was also called to the scene, but Mahan said with so many people crossing through the area the track provided limited success.
The shooting death comes on the heels of a Saturday afternoon shooting which left 28-year-old Steven Lawson after he was shot inside a church during a funeral service on the city's north side.
Roberto can be reached by phone at 810-429-3865, by email at racosta1@mlive.com, on Facebook at Roberto Acosta Flint Journal or on Twitter @racostaFJ. |
