After debating his proposed duties, the Flint Board of Education approved a seven-month, $70,000-contract for a consultant who previously worked with Superintendent Walter Milton Jr. in New York.
Consultant Julius B. Anthony already has been working in Flint for nearly a month. Now he can be paid because his contract officially was approved in a 7-1 vote Wednesday with board member Vera J. Perry dissenting.
Anthony, who will make $10,000 a month from now through June 30, previously served as a consultant in the Fallsburg, N.Y., School District when Milton was superintendent there.
Perry voted against the contract because she said the scope of Anthony's duties outlined in the agreement went beyond her expectations. Perry thought Anthony's sole job was to help the district form a strategic plan, but other board members said his role could go into other areas.
In addition to forming a strategic plan by June 30, the contract allows him to help the superintendent form a funding plan for new community education programs, create more partnerships with businesses and seek alternative funding sources for the district.
Another issue previously debated over the consultant contract was whether Anthony would be reimbursed for any travel he may make while doing work for the district. It was agreed that any travel made by Anthony would have to be pre-approved by the school board.
