Friends, Members, Countrymen/women:

The State Theatre of Traverse City has now been open for three months. How
good has this first quarter been? How's this: Every single week since our
opening, our box office results have been in the top ten percentile for the
entire country! This past weekend we brought "No Country for Old Men." It
had played out at the multiplex already for three months. And yet, our
attendance was so great, the State placed in the top THREE percentile
amongst the 1,100+ theaters showing the film. The film went on to win the
Oscar on Sunday for Best Picture and attendance during the week has been
brisk -- so we're holding "No Country for Old Men" over for just one more
week beginning today. Do not miss this stunning, poetic piece of filmmaking
while we have it here on the big screen at the State.

Speaking of the Oscars, I hear that we had a rockin' Oscar viewing party at
the State on Sunday night. I'm sorry I wasn't there as I was busy throwing a
rockin' pity party in L.A. No, seriously, I know how it feels to win and I
know how it feels to lose, and trust me, losing means more space on your
mantel for scented candles. The documentary that won, "Taxi to the Dark
Side," is excellent (we brought it last year to the film festival). I will
bring it for a full week's run in April.

But first, the great month of March. It's that time of year for we Irish to
celebrate the fact that we are literally everywhere and there's just no
being rid of us. My apologies.

So it's going to be all things Irish at the State Theatre this month. The
Sunday Brunch Series will include films from Ireland, films by Irish
directors, and films about the Irish American experience ("The Dead," "In
America," "The Commitments," "Hear My Song"). From an early Coen brothers
classic this Sunday -- "Miller's Crossing" -- to some great films for kids
on Saturday morning ("Darby O'Gill and the Little People," "The Secret of
Roan Inish," "Into the West"), to older Irish-themed classics on Wednesday
mornings ("Angels with Dirty Faces," "Going My Way," "My Left Foot," "The
Informer"), you won't want to miss any of these great movies. And if you're
wearing green when you come to any of these series movies (Saturday before
noon, Sunday at noon, or Wednesday at 11 a.m.), you get an extra dollar off
our already low popcorn or combo prices!

In addition to these fine films, we have a great line-up for our community
night movies, starting this Monday with the Traverse Area District Library
series showing of "The Devil and Daniel Johnston." Other Monday night films
include "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," "Everything Is Illuminated,"
"The Mission," and "King Corn."

We also have a couple of Tuesday night specials in March. Veterans for Peace
will sponsor "Soldiers of Conscience," and we will present northern
Michigan's own Song of the Lakes "Live from Interlochen" along with a
documentary about the band by local filmmakers, "Journey to Joy."

We'll have opera ("Peter Grimes," "Tristan und Isolde"), and the day before
Easter we'll present a special screening of "Jesus Christ Superstar" at 9:30
a.m. And we will be one of the only theaters in the country showing a
special program that enhances interest in science, math and astronomy for
kids, complete with sing-alongs ("Zula Patrol"). Something for everyone at
the State.

Our other first run films this month will include the Beatles tribute,
"Across the Universe," an encore run of the film that opened last summer's
film fest, "Once," and a great little film that was an instant hit here at a
special screening in January, "King of California."

Today, Leap Year Day, is like a special bonus day we only get once every
four years. I like to spend this day trying to fix all the things I did
wrong since the last leap year. That's no easy task, but by midnight tonight
I think I'll have it all worked out. In the meantime, enjoy the bonus of
having a downtown movie palace. A lot of people took their own leap of faith
to make it happen. Sometimes, when we all put our minds to it, it all works
out in a very nice way.

Listen to me, Mr. Optimist 2008! See you at the movies in downtown TC!

Yours,
Michael Moore
