Flint police will vote next week on a tentative agreement on a contract reached with the city of Flint after the officers union and city officials met with an arbitrator in Sterling Heights.

The president of the union that represents officers said the contract would provide the first pay raise officers have received in eight years.

"We didn't get everything we wanted, but neither did they," said Keith Speer, head of the Flint Police Officers Association. "I think it's a good deal."

Speer declined to discuss specifics of the contract, but officers say generally the deal would give officers a $4-an-hour raise and a kind of signing bonus, but take away or reduce certain annual and "sick time" benefits. It would also give the chief more power in certain disciplinary situations.

Speer said informational meetings would be held this week for union members to learn the details of the proposed contract.
