Flint police union-city dispute goes to federal court
By Kim Crawford

The request by the union representing Flint police officers to temporarily prevent the restructuring of their department by Mayor Donald Williamson has been removed from Genesee Circuit Court to federal court.
But when a hearing will be held on the matter – and whether the case will remain in U.S. District Court – isn’t yet known.
“It’s just a delaying tactic brought by the city,” said Keith Speer, president of the Flint Police Officers Association, about the movement of the hearing from state to federal court. “It will probably be sent back to state court, but it doesn’t matter.”

Hayman disqualifies himself from Marable case
By Paul Janczewski
pjanczewski@flintjournal.com • 810.766.6333
Genesee Circuit Judge Archie L. Hayman disqualified himself from hearing a lawsuit filed by a local attorney against a Flint district court judge.
Hayman said hearing the case against Judge Herman Marable Jr. may present the wrong appearance because he is the chief judge of both circuit and district courts.
The case will be reassigned to another Genesee County Circuit Court judge, but no date for the hearing was available.
The case was filed by attorney Kenneth M. Scott, who claimed that Marable has denied due process to more than 200 people he found in contempt of court.
Marable is represented by Denise C. Barton, an assistant state attorney general.
In court documents, Barton argued the case should be dismissed. |
