(09/19/11) - The FBI has released its final crime statistics for 2010 and they show Flint's violent crime has increased, going against the national trend.

The FBI warns against ranking cities using its crime stats saying quick comparisons can create misleading perceptions.

Looking just at Flint, it is clear, violent crime is up.

Flint Mayor Dayne Walling said these latest statistics are a reminder of how much work is left to do and how difficult times are.

It's something Tina Moreland knows all too well.

Moreland lives down the street from one of the city's many makeshift memorials, lost her job in 2009 and nearly one year later, she lost her daughter to violence.

"Sheena Smith," Moreland said.

"She was 22."

Smith was pregnant with her second child and attending college when she was shot following a large fight on Flint's northside.

Smith was one of Flint's 66 homicides last year, murdered in April 26.

FBI statistics Monday show just 53 murders, but still a huge spike compared to the 36 reported in 2009.

Moreland is now raising her granddaughter, going back to school herself and praying for better days.

"I love Flint, however I have seen the decay, the violence," Moreland said.

According to the final statistics, violent crime, murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, for example, have increased at a time when nationally, there's been a decline of 6.5%.

Property crimes, across the country, are down as well.

In Flint, the FBI stats show larceny and motor vehicle theft have decreased too.

Walling believes those crimes may be under-reported by citizens.

Saginaw bumped to No. 2 'Most Violent City in U.S.'

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
The Federal Bureau of Investigation rankings for violent cities has been released and the news, once again, isn't great for 2010.

Flint holds the record for the most violent city in the nation in 2010, according to FBI statistics.

Flint had 22 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, figures show. Second place Detroit registered 18 violent crimes per 1,000 residents.

St. Louis, MO, New Haven, CT, and Memphis, TN round out the top 5. FBI numbers show Flint reported 53 murders for 2010. Nationally, violent crime dropped 6 percent in 2010.

But there is a ray of light in the dark data; Saginaw is no longer the most violent city per capita (50,000 residents) in the U.S.

Camden, NJ ranked number one in the country for violent crimes in 2010 in a study by the FBI. Saginaw dropped to No. 2.

It's the first time the city hasn't held the dubious first place title since 2002.

Flint is No. 3, but the most violent if you consider cities with more than 100,000 residents. Detroit and Pontiac also made the top 10 list of most violent cities.

FLINT, Michigan — Flint was the most violent city in the nation in 2010, according to FBI statistics released today.

Flint had 22 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, figures show. It was about 4 residents higher than second-place Detroit.

St. Louis, New Haven, Conn., and Memphis round out the top 5.

Flint reported 53 murders for 2010, but a Flint Journal count shows 66. When adjusted, Flint also has the highest murder rate, followed by New Orleans, St. Louis, Baltmore and Detroit .

The FBI released preliminary statistics in May.

Flint reported more than 2,400 violent crimes, including 92 rapes, 670 robberies and 1,597 aggravated assaults, statistics show.

The FBI cautions against rankings, saying that it provides "no insight into the numerous variables that mold crime."

Nationally, violent crime dropped 6 percent in 2010, marking the fourth straight year of declines. And property crime also was down for the eighth straight year, falling 2.7 percent.

Nationwide, there were an estimated 1.2 million violent crimes in 2010 and an estimated 9 million property crimes.

Robbery fell 10 percent, rape dropped 5 percent, and murder, non-negligent manslaughter and aggravated assault fell more than 4 percent.

Each of the property crime offenses decreased in 2010. The largest decline, 7.4 percent, was for motor vehicle thefts. Burglaries decreased 2 percent and larceny-thefts declined 2.4 percent.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Interesting that the count, in the Journal anyway, was 66 homicides & the FBI count is 53. Somebody run out of fingers?

Maybe that's the plan. People don't report crimes because they know there are no officers to respond and no detectives to investigate. Behold! Lower crime!!
