Police still searching, seeking help from public in finding suspect in shooting that killed 6-year-old
Published: Tuesday, November 02, 2010, 11:21 PM Updated: Wednesday, November 03, 2010, 1:27 AM
Khalil AlHajal | The Flint Journal
FLINT, Michigan — Police as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday were still searching for the man accused of shooting and killing 6-year-old Jonaries Holden.

Officials are hoping an appeal for help from the public will help them catch DaVontrae Benton, who is being charged with murder, four counts of assault with intent to murder and felony firearm in relation to the Monday slaying.

The twins were asleep in the back seat of their father's car Monday when a dispute over money led to a man shooting at the car and hitting Jonaries, who later died.

Police believe Benton, while driving a maroon 2003 Chevrolet Impala with license plate number 9JXR28 on Monday, fired one shot at a vehicle Jonaries was riding in with his father, who owed Benton $60.

"We're still looking for this guy," said Police Chief Alvern Lock, holding up a photo of the 25-year-old suspect. "We need all the help we can get."

The bullet struck the boy in the shoulder and he died later at Hurley Medical Center.

The two cars were driving on Flint Park Boulevard somewhere between Martin Luther King Avenue and Saginaw Street just after 10 p.m. when the shooting occurred, according to Sgt. Brett Small.

There was an altercation between the two men over the $60 loan before Benton fired the shot, according to Lock.

Jonaries was in the seat behind his father, Johnny Holden, who was driving. Three other people were in the car, including Jonaries' twin brother Quniares, a two-year-old boy and his mother. They were not harmed by the bullet.

Small and Lock asked the public on Tuesday to keep an eye out for Benton and call police with any information.

Not wanting to compromise the investigation, Small offered few more details about the circumstances surrounding the incident or the search for Benton.

"I really don't want to get into the details of the meat and potatoes of the investigation, but we're asking the public to notify us if they can help," he said.

Alvern said it's unclear if any of multiple shell casings found near the scene of Monday's shooting came from the bullet discharged in Monday's shooting. He said they may have come from previous incidents.

"There were several bullet casings up there, so we don't know if we got one or not," he said.

"You wonder what does it take for this to stop. That's why we're asking for the public to help us out."

He said the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.

Mayor Dayne Walling said law enforcement officials are pulling out all the stops to try to catch the suspect.

"This is a terrible tragedy that has affected all of us very deeply," Walling said. "The loss of a child is a terrible loss for a community and every effort is being made by the Flint police department and law enforcement partners to bring this suspect to justice and to protect the families and the neighborhoods affected directly by this killing.”

City Councilman Scott Kindcaid said he has faith the suspect will be nabbed.

"This guy will be caught in no time," he said. "The police department will track this guy down in a relatively short amount of time."

Lock asked the public to call Small at (810) 237-6917 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-5245 with any tips.
