A safer Flint
May tonight's anti-crime event be a step toward less violence

THE FLINT JOURNAL FIRST EDITION

Flint's installment of "America's Night Out Against Crime," with the main event tonight near Kettering University, could be a step toward establishing peace and safety in the city, but no more than that.

Of about 10,000 U.S. cities holding these affairs, few could need a community happening in the interest of creating peace more profoundly than crime-plagued Flint.

The idea is for a multitude to lock up their homes between 6 and 10 p.m., turn on some security lights and head to the west side campus for such summer evening pleasures as jazz music, games, bounce toys, food treats and more, to be shared with fellow residents.

May the event build a sense of empathy and trust that will lead to finding a way to begin rooting out the violence that plagues the city - a violence so hideous and indifferent to the value of life that it kills children who just happen to be in the way.

A grand neighborhood party will not restore life to 5-year-old NiYauna Jones, or erase the image of the shooting of the child as she road in a car with her sister and other relatives on July 6. Three more violent killings followed in the interim, bringing to the city a disgraceful total of at least 36 likely murders already this year, with uncounted injuries and inflections of terror over and above the deaths.

So healthy as the impulse behind the Flint community gathering and other related activities might be, it at best can only set a tone for addressing the true state of the city, which would take an unflinchingly honest and courageous look into who is truly responsible and what it would take to begin putting crime on a downward spiral.

If that cannot be done at tonight's event near Kettering, at least the people there might begin to think about how and where such a process might begin. May at least some of them be truly inspired, because an American city's future is desperate for some caring and attention.
