Topic: McCain's Health Care Solution: Less People on Health Care

With all the talk about lipstick, several issues important to voters have been neglected. Health care is one of them.

A study from professors at Columbia, Harvard, Purdue and Michigan projects that over the next five years 20 million Americans who have employer-based health insurance would lose it under the McCain-Palin plan:

McCain-Palin's health plan is based on eliminating the non-taxable exclusion of employer payments for health coverage, replacing it with a tax credit for those who purchase coverage, and encouraging Americans to move to a national market for nongroup insurance.

Basically, the value of any health care you get today will be added to your paycheck as an instant raise. You'll pay payroll taxes on the raise, then get a up to a $2,500 deduction on your federal taxes at the end of the year for any money you spend on health care.

Initially this change will have little impact on the number of uninsured people. However, over time the number of uninsured will grow as the value of the tax credit falls relative to rising health care costs.

Once the money is yours, if you're healthy you can leave your company's health coverage pool and go find cheaper insurance. For the young, this is a savings. For the old or those with pre-existing conditions who remain in the company pool, the rates will rise even faster, and people will drop health care coverage as a result.

In addition, moving toward a relatively unregulated nongroup market will tend to raise costs, reduce the generosity of benefits, and leave people with fewer consumer protections.

Under McCain, health insurance will come from the Internet banner ads that say "Paying too much for your insurance? Click here."

BTW, an extra 20 million people without health care...where will they go? Same as the uninsured today - government programs, emergency rooms - all covered by your taxes.

So the end result of the McCain-Palin health care plan will be less people covered and higher deficits (McCain will borrow from China, but at least he won't raise your taxes).

Big business will like this new plan - they will finally be rid of rising health care costs. Who did you think health care reform was supposed to help?

To everyone who tried to scare people that Obama's health care is socialism - no problem - this is what you'll get instead.

Why should I bother? You'll call it socialism and rail against it no matter what. Get that old train of fear rolling so people don't notice the alternative.

Man-up and defend McCain.

If we had to vote for health care plans I'd vote for McCain's. I think the main point is he's trying to push for health Savings Accounts. I don't think they're a bad idea like socialized medicine. Ideally we would just eliminate the income tax and American's would be able to afford health care.

You're right Adam, the Health Savings Account come into play if you don't spend all $2,500 one year ($5K for families), you can somehow apply the balance to next year.

The study doesn't think it will change the number of people who have access to health care, and McCain's website only mentions he supports them, not how they work. Care to explain them to us?

As for Obama's plan being socialized medicine, here is what those wacky liberals at the Wall Street Journal had to say about it.
