Folks in DC need to start paying attention to the 10th amendment.

Montana from the Over-Nite Sensation LP.

Saw FZ with my dad live at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. What a trip. Literally.

I was at the same Frank Zappa concert at Crisler (now the aviary) Arena on November 18, 1975. I drove two of my friends down to the Michigan Union and they camped out for two days. We had second row seats. Larry Coryell (a guitar god) was the warm up act. Some guy came screaming down from the rafters "ZAPPA!!!." and he was promptly shown the exit.

I still have the poster for this concert in my basement. If you want more cool stuff on Zappa, including a chance to get good audio bootlegs of his shows (including a May 10, 1974 show at the IMA- where the White Building of UofM-F now stands) this guy will trade. I think his web site is: cheepnis.com

After listening to Frank Zappa, and reading the lyrics to his songs, it's real hard to believe that he didn't do drugs ( or at least he claimed not to).

FZ claimed to not do drugs????

Never heard that one. I don't see how anyone at one of his concerts (including him) wasn't at least on a second hand buzz.

Are you sure you're not confusing him with Ted Nugent?

I did not see Hendrix at the IMA (too young)- I did, however, see Van Halen there in 1978.

Regarding Zappa and drugs- there are two biographies and several audio interviews that document Zappa's disdain for drugs. Many Mothers were thrown out of his band for drug use. He also did public service annoucements in the late 1960's against the use of speed.

I recommend the book by Barry Miles "Zappa" (2004) Grove Press. One should be able to find it cheap on Amazon. Interesting quotes on the dust jacket include: "The definitve Biography of Religion-Baiting, Republican hating, chain-smoking, coffee-addicted, self-taught guitar virutoso Frank Zappa"-Miles & "Zappa was my Elvis"- Matt Groening, Creator of The Simpsons.

I know you're not talking about Miles Davis but talking about biographies got me thinking. Miles Davis' autobiography is also a good read. If you're not a jazz guy there is still a lot of stuff about rock in the 70s. ( Carlos Santana. The Dead ) There is some hilarious stuff about Steve Miller. Miles also claims to have formed the greatest rock band the world has seen. Miles was one of a kind and you can hear his gravelly voice when you read it.
