I hear that there were more layoffs in the building department.... Could it be that the finances aren't as rosy as the Mayor said?

Or it could be getting rid of dead weight.

Flint lays off more workers
Posted by Joe Lawlor | The Flint Journal January 28, 2008 18:00PM

More city employees were pink-slipped today, this time code enforcers, building inspectors and workers who help tackle the city's blight problems.

The layoffs come on the heels of 33 "temporary and seasonal" employees who were laid off in early January including a department head and a middle manager.

City Administrator Darryl Buchanan said Mayor Don Williamson hired about 150 extra employees during his term as mayor across a number of departments.

"We've made progress," Buchanan said, referring to the numerous demolitions and the mayor's successful city cleanup programs. "There's less of a problem."

Buchanan said financial realities led to the decision, and that the city had to downsize due to shrinking revenue.

"My heart aches," Buchanan said. "These are tough decisions that had to be made."
Buchanan did not immediately indicate how many workers were laid off, but Councilman Scott Kincaid said the cuts were deep and left the building department with few employees.

"This is just the tip of the iceburg," Kincaid said.

Council President Carolyn Sims said she's been trying to meet with the administration for six months to head off financial problems, but she's been put off.

These guys also inspected rental homes to make sure they were up to code and safe for families to move in to. They were making sure that the homeowners weren't turning into slumlords--not to mention the revenues they were bringing into the City by holding them accountable for the upkeep of the rental homes.

Lots of screwing around by some of these guys. Some dishonesty about hours worked, inspections completed etc... This is stuff Bill Ayre knew about but choose not to do anything about.

When these people were hired they were hired to write citations and generate revenue for the city by levying fines. Their intake was quite less than anticipated so bye bye guys and girls.

well.....an employee should be thankful and loyal to the employer. Confused

i also think it's wrong to put any blame on bill ayre. that guy was very, very
busy securing funding and dealing with council. if there is any blame,
and i say this in complete ignorance of current policy, it may have been
with immediate department heads or their immediate underlings as they
are the ones to issue work responsibilities. in times as these, all job
descriptions should be reevaluated and perhaps changed. taking into
account finances, the union would have to acclimate to suggested
tweaking in order to minimize wasted time. in other words, some have to
step up and make sh*t happen. there are ways to make that successful without causing internal disarray. Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink

there is a saying in construction "8 hours work for 8 hours pay". Wink
