Pleasant to determine how to handle what may be an Indian burial ground near Atwood Stadium. On Monday, the remains of what a Michigan State University anthropologist says are those of a very old Indian man were unearthed at a construction site at Stone Street and Third Avenue. A day later, another set of skeletal remains were dug up about 150 feet away from the first site. The MSU anthropologist also believes those to be Indian remains, Flint police said. The remains were discovered by workers excavating basements for the Stone Street redevelopment project in the Carriage Town Historic District. Police Lt. Tim Johnson said since it is no longer a criminal matter, information will be turned over to Saylor Building Company, which is building new homes in the area. Johnson said the company will determine how best to work with the Tribal Council to determine if the land is a burial ground and what needs to be done if it is. Officials from Saylor could not be reached for comment. Judy Christenson, project manager for Flint NIPP, which is renovating a home on Stone Street directly across from where the remains were found, said it is unclear how this discovery could affect NIPP's project. Police believe someone from the Tribal Council may need to perform a ceremony at the burial site. "We'll just have to wait and see what this would do (at our site)," Christenson said. The whole Saginaw River Valley area was known as a "happy hunting ground." I find it interesting that the remains were only found 2 or so feet underground in an already rather developed area. (which is probably why it was first considered criminal). Years and years ago, diggers found the skeleton of a native american women buried on the grounds of an old one room school house in Flushing. I think they only found one body, so it wasn't considered a "burial ground" or cemetery.
