LT, I don't think calling you out on a totally false statement is whining. You said the Silverado S&L (1 institution) bailout was $1.4 trillion. That is absolutely false. If you're not big enough to man up and admit you made a mistake, then I guess you win.

LTH (not twotap), maybe you were thinking of these sources?

The Bush family and the S&L Scandal
http://members.tripod.com/rationalrevolution0/war/bush_family_and_the_s.htm

"There are several ways in which the Bush family plays into the Savings and Loan scandal, which involves not only many members of the Bush family but also many other politicians that are still in office and still part of the Bush Jr. administration today. Jeb Bush, George Bush Sr., and his son Neil Bush have all been implicated in the Savings and Loan Scandal, which cost American tax payers over $1.4 TRILLION dollars (note that this is about one quarter of our national debt)."

The Relatively Charmed Life Of Neil Bush
Despite Silverado and Voodoo, Fortune Still Smiles on the President's Brother

By Peter Carlson
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, December 28, 2003; Page D01

Excerpt(s):

Neither Good nor Walters ever repaid a nickel of their Silverado loans, and in 1988 Silverado went belly up, leaving U.S. taxpayers holding the bag for $1.3 billion in debts. *** Ultimately, Bush paid $50,000 as his part of a federal lawsuit against Silverado and was reprimanded by the OTS. Good and Walters ended up declaring bankruptcy, and JNB, which had never found oil or made money, quietly perished.

Holy Moly dishonest politicans who would have thunk it. Thanks for the link.

In the late '80s and early '90s, Bush embarrassed his father, George H.W. Bush, with his shady dealings as a board member of the infamous Silverado Savings and Loan, whose collapse cost taxpayers $1 billion.

I say, again, did that. Show me one unbiased source on the front page that backs up your claim. Not there.

How many effin times do I have to say it? You said the Silverado S&L bailout was $1.4 trillion. NOT TRUE!

LT, if ya have to LIE to make your case, then you must not have a very good case.

Wow...the Bush family got $1.4 trillion all to themselves? See above.

Now, how about an independent source:

"The Savings and Loan crisis of the 1980s was a wave of savings and loan association failures in the United States in which over 1,000 savings and loan institutions failed in "the largest and costliest venture in public misfeasance, malfeasance and larceny of all time."[1] The ultimate cost of the crisis is estimated to have totaled around USD$160.1 billion, about $124.6 billion of which was directly paid for by the U.S. government [2], which contributed to the large budget deficits of the early 1990s."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savings_and_Loan_Crisis

$1.4 trillion? Or $124.6 billion?

Once again, people hear what they want to hear and believe what they want to believe.

LT I'm really disappointed in you. I know you're a Bush hater, but I didn't think that hatred was so great that it would blind you to the truth. I thought you were a better man than that.

The S&L scandal cost taxpayers plenty but I don't think we'll ever know truly accurate figures. There are so many authors it's hard to know who's telling truth where there are differences, or whether their sources are reliable.
