Daryl Buchanan has been confirmed as the new city of Flint Administrator. The public spoke in favor of Buchanan. I also spoke in support of him and said he should abstain from voting. Another speaker said he should resign. Daryl pledged he would abstain from voting. Upon pressure from councilwoman Poplar Buchanan agreed to resign his position as councilman and he then sat down with the public. Later before he was appointed he was qustioned by the council. The final vote was 6-0. Carolym Sims was out on business and Jim Ananich was out sick.

Thanks for your personal report and support of Darryl Buchanan, Adam. What kind of questions was he asked by council?

Do you support Carolyn Sims having voted for herself as council president?

OK, Ms. Simms is on the Council voting for a council position!

Daryl is on the council voting for an aappointment by the mayor!

BIG DIFFERENCE!!!

By Daryl resigning, he clearly did the right thing! Saved the city more legal costs. There was no way the Council was not going to vote him in. Everybody wanted it. They just wanted it to be done correctly. Ms. Cook stepped down and daryl available for appointment. See how things can work when everybody follows the rules and ethics!

We may have just made the first break through with the DON Administration!

Carolyn Sims was an internal position. Without her vote the council may have been hopelessly deadlocked. Under Roberts rules I think it is customary for all the members of a body to have a say in who leads them.

I thought it was necessary for Daryl to abstain to avoid a conflict of interest. I thought making him resign was a little extreme and perhaps unwise if he didn't get the positiion but he was willing to go to that extreme to satisfy the critics. He even resigned before the public comment was done which meant he would not be able to respond to whatever the remaining speakers said. Without Sims and Ananich being there Daryl did have the votes he needed locked up but he still went to the extreme to satisfy his critics.

Daryl was asked some tough questions by the council. Like what he would do to help the council and mayor work together. Daryl mentioned stuff like re-legalizing the north end CDC's (community development block clubs) He also mentioned about trying to get the mayor to better listen and looking at agenda items/taling points that have been issues for years. He was only asked about 5 questions but they were pretty straight to the point and mainly focused on working together and improving communication. I think councilwoman Poplar was also upset about the referral situtation. Buchanan said he would work on that and be a go between between the council members and department heads. Gonzalez suggested using technology so department heads can go in and make comments on referrals and the council can see the updates. Buchanan said that is a goods idea and he would get with Gonzalez on that about setting it up. Daryl also mentioned about once again following the charter.

It looks like Eric Mays will be seeking the appointment for Buchanan's seat and he will also be running for it in the special election whenever that is. I don't know who else would go for that position although there may be someone. I also spoke in support of Eric Mays getting getting the seat. Mays spoke about forcing the mayor to appoint an official police chief but I am confident he will work with the mayor and Buchanan and also be pro jobs. I think we must have Mays on the council so we have a chance at making Flint more business/jobs friendly. Mays also was working on the casino deal in the past. We could have a chance at that again if he is on the council and there is still support for that.

Thank you Ted and Adam. Ted, your words came through loud and clear this time. My concern was that Kincaid and Sims could have voted no on the appointment after a resignation would be submitted by Buchanan, simply because it was proposed by the mayor. I did not previously have the impression he had such solid support from council members. I'm thankful and relieved that ordeal's over and look forward to seeing some real progress at city hall in the near future.

Now as for the idea about Eric Mays being appointed by council to replace Buchanan's city council seat, or even running for the open seat in the ensuing election, that's an entirely new subject. I know he's been pretty vocal but has he run for this position in the past? Anyone interested in promoting him might want to check the record at the county clerk's office and ask him how he might want you to respond if asked about it.

i hope they realize eric is a camera hog!! that dude will be in every
newscast he can get in. i shudder at the thought.. Shocked Shocked

there are two ways to perceive this situation.

1. they will not appoint him because they know he's a loose cannon!! his
actions will make them look bad.

2.they will appoint him because they know he's a loose cannon!!!! his
actions will make them look more centrist.

whatever happens, the journal's gonna love this!!!!! Cool Confused Confused Confused Cool

Buchanan had broad based support. There was not a single speaker that totally opposed his appointment. I think Alex Harris the most vocal Williamson critic only said that Buchanan should resign his post on council and if he didn't do that then it would be o.k. to vote againt him. Buchanan has some serious political skills!

I admit Eric Mays is somewhat of a "camera hog" but I think we could get him in line. I think he does listen to people. He's also very knowledgeable about the charter, politics, council rules, home businesses, ordinances, casino deal, Williamson etc.

The "camera hoggishness" could actually be a benefit because Mays is definately willing to go out into the media. If he was on the council and they did something good the whole city, county and maybe even some of the state would know about it. lol

Even if he looses the appointment I think he has a great shot at winning the 1st ward spot in the special election now that Buchanan is gone. Mays was smart enough not to waste his time trying to take on Buchanan in the last election. Mays and Buchanan were also very cordial with each other when Mays was trying to recall Buchanan so they should be able to work well with each other is Mays won council.

What record are you speaking to on Eric (absentee ballot ) Mays at the county clerks office? Is there any proof of his questionable actions?
Anyone that possibly defrauds elderly voters has not my vote.
