This is bull folks, Genesee Towers is safer than most buildings downtown Flint. People are mad that Kumar isn't apart of the good old boys group and he does things on his own time. I agree it looks like shit, however its an important building for the city.

1.) A Skyline is very important to a city, people want tall buildings in a downtown area. Otherswise its just like being downtown Grand Blanc.

2.) This building brings in about $200 -500 thousand dollars for the city when its fully rent. ( if not more ).

3.) This building could be a pivotal part of the redevelopment of downtown Flint. This could house students, offices, restaurants, casino, apartments etc.

4.) If the building is torn down, nothing will ever be built there that will be more than 4 stories tall. The tax base for the city will decrease.

5.) You get more tax revenue with a structure than you do with a vacant lot.

6.) Young people want a unique enviroment to live in, this building may be "ugly". HOWEVER, this building could look a lot better by being remodeled.

7.) Architect Freeman Greer has drawings of what this building could look like if it is re-skinned with new glass. The costs is very low, compared to the money this building could bring in.

jeeees ryan, how long has kumar had that building???
he's done nothing to the outside, not even clean the windows.
it hasn't been full in what, a decade or more????
hell, us old folks also like "unique environments" but damn!! it's a dump!
theres always stuff dropping off the facade...
if he wants it used, he needs to make it habitable.

i think he was banking on some entity buying him out at a profit.

Flint Journal articles:

Sun., Oct.19, 1997, Bidder's $500,000 gets key to Towers, Auction closed to the public.
Tue., Oct.21,1997, New owner of Towers eases some minds, troubles others
Wed.,Oct.22,1997, Patience pays off for new owner of Genesee Towers

***
Quit Claim Deed to Kumar and his wife was recorded 10/30/1997.
***
The 10/22/97 article states, in part: "When V. Kumar Vemulapalli and a Detroit-area partner offered $6.5 million for the Genesee Towers in 1992, the building's owner 'wouldn't talk to us,' Vemulapalli said, and it sold for $10.5 million. Five years later, Vemulapalli was able to buy Flint's tallest building for a fraction of his original offer. His bid of $500,000 was the highest during Saturday's auction of the 19-story structure at Harrison and E. First Streets." *** "Vemulapalli said he plans to make repairs over the next couple of years. Among his plans are reinforcing the building's parking deck and improving its heating and cooling systems. 'My plans are to make sure whatever needs to be done gets done,' he said. The building's stucco-like facade, which is chipping, will be among the last renovations because it is not a safety issue, he said." "Various sources familiary with the structure have estimated that renovations could run well into the millions."

i vote for the land bank, even though the building is "ugly", its a lot better than another vacant piece of land where a building used to be. plus its unique. i think its in one of my wedding pictures.

its too bad the city couldn't just take away the building from the owner, or buy it for the price of the land only, then sell the building to someone who CAN actually do work on it. I mean, I assume if its demolished, the owner would have to pay for the demolition costs and be left with the vacant land anyway... why not just cut out the middle man? The owner would walk away with more money than he would've had if he had to pay for the demolition, and the city walks away with a 19 story building that they can sell to another developer who will actually work to save it...

or I could just totally be wrong with how law and policy work... which I probably am.

I cannot believe taking land from anyone in this day and age is still a natural thought to some of you on this board. Think of the rights of others including Kumar, and remember the city and others (Uptown) had the same opportunity to purchase GT but didn't. How about instead of the city trying to take or demolition this property, they work with Kumar to purchase (at his price) or renovate it just like other projects in the works???

I guess I did write "take away"... it must have been a slip of the hand. I'm totally against emminent domain.

of course the best way to is work with the owner, but given the tone of the articles I've seen on this issue, it doesn't look like anyone is willing to do that.

Sorry Ryan.

Your Vote against saving Manning St. cottages to build a parking lot, makes one question your wanting to save a skyline raining down concrete on pedestrians.

Who is paying for your Values?

I agree with you on the Manning St thing but I think he is right on this one. We desperately need the jobs that this building could house. Driving to Auburn Hills to work really sucks! I'd rather risk being crushed by falling concrete and work in the towers.

Obviously the mayor wants Genesee Towers Tore Down, so why is Ryan saying save it? Ryan voted against tearing down manning street homes didn't he?
