Top officers sue over special detail
FLINTTHE FLINT JOURNAL FIRST EDITIONFriday, October 26, 2007By Bryn Micklebmickle@flintjournal.com • 810.766.6383
FLINT - Nine high-ranking city police officers are suing Flint Mayor Don Williamson and the city over the creation of a special police bureau last year.

Three captains and six lieutenants have filed lawsuits in federal court alleging they were victims of reverse discrimination when Williamson handpicked people to staff the department's Citizens Service Bureau.

Four black patrolmen and a white female patrol officer were chosen for the newly created inspector and major positions.

The officers suing the city are white and were all ranked higher than the officers chosen by Williamson.

Williamson on Thursday declined comment on the lawsuit, except to say "I picked the best qualified people."

The lawsuits claim that Williamson made his choices for the CSB last December, a little over a month after a meeting with NAACP and union leaders about labor strife at the police department.

Amid criticism that the department's command staff needed more cultural diversity, the lawsuits allege that Williamson created a new police bureau to quell complaints and staffed it mainly with black officers.

Glen N. Lenhoff, the attorney who filed the lawsuits, called it a "stark case of reverse discrimination."

The lawsuits claim the new positions were never posted and no testing procedures were used to fill them.

The inspector and major positions both paid a higher wage than a captain spot, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuits seeks at least $75,000 in monetary damages from the city and Williamson for Flint police captains David Porter, Scott Sutter and Bethany Whaley, as well as Flint police lieutenants Jennifer Besson, John Bundy, Tim Johnson, Philip Smith, Darwin Sparks and David Winch.

Lenhoff said he plans to file two more reverse discrimination lawsuits on behalf of 18 city officers and sergeants who were also bypassed for inspector and major promotions.

And the timing of the filing has nothing to do with the election.

If you believe that, contact me for a great deal on the Mackinac Bridge. You'll make enough from the tolls to retire in 3 months.

Could be politically motivated as I am sure the promoting of less qualified was. I dont have a dog in this fight and couldnt care less which Democrat becomes Flints next mayor but when I see a story about those that have been screwed by some affirmative action nonsense standing up and saying were not gonna take this crap anymore I find it interesting.
