you're right, i shouldn't expect all my answers to just come to me without looking for myself.
i've driven some of my old family neighborhoods. My great great uncle still lives on Ohio. But i'm too shy to ask people's questions.

You don't have to walk the streets of Flint to know what's going on.
From my point of view, ok, he paved a few roads and bridges. That's the easy stuff to get done. The harder things, like attracting business and addressing crime, have been left untouched. I have seen no progress from the mayor's office. And don't give me those phony crime stats -- he's comparing January of this year to September of this year. He's very conveniently leaving out everything prior to 2007, where crime went up somewhere like 100% over 2-3 years. So now he's reduced it to only 50% more than it was 3 years ago... is that good? Anyone can lie with stats. Even stupid people.
I was more enthusiastic about Walling before I saw him chumming with Stanley, but lesser of two evils, I suppose... |

my problem is that i'm not very well versed in the whole politics thing. I'm learning, but like most average city citizens, I'm not a political analyst or a private detective.
I heard this radio ad for williamson that says something like "Walling doesn't even have a job..."
and I started thinking... what job did williamson have before he became mayor? I'm not asking that to be provocative or to take a jab, but I really don't know. As far as I knew, his wife makes the money.
I, too, am a little wary of Stanley's support of Walling... and I don't know the extent of it, but there is an entire Flint ward that voted Stanley into the commissioner office, so.. what do I know? |

well tegan, honestly i like stanley as a person. i think he made a few
mistakes while mayor but his intent was good, and most people know
that. i personally prefer williamson but i will always regard stanley as
a man who gave an honest try to the best of his ability. i know i'm going
to catch hell for this but, thank god we're in america!! 
this will be an interesting race because it pits those (black & white) who
believe williamson has done a great job to date against a newcomer who
apparently has the right connections, even to pull retired politicos from
the florida golf courses along with staunch democratic support (in a non
partisan contest). the question is, can stanley and sharpe excite the black
vote enough to sway the vote in wallings favor?
or is this really a "class race" as it regards educated folks against
the uneducated (no college), including both black and white. there are
so many variables to this equation...i really don't know, it's too hard for
me to call but, alas, it will be interesting indeed!!  
it's interesting to me because both kats are white, so the race factor
will have no bearing. |

It is a tough race to call. I know a lot of the younger kids in the growing art scene support walling, but a lot of older people support williamson...
In a way, and maybe this is just the naive white suburban girl speaking, but I am glad that both candidates are the same race, and would have been equally happy if both candidates were black. I feel that sometimes when one is black and one is white, people might subconciously vote for the candidate that best resembles them... its a weird subconcious racism that we studied in a psychology class back in the day...
anyway, i've pretty much given up caring about the mayoral race. i don't vote in it, i have little control, and i have more pressing things to worry about!

I've talked to a lot of older Flint residents in the last few weeks and 90% of them wanted Williamson out. They are tired of living in a city where the crime rate has gone up and up and no one has done anything about it. They want a city where their kids and grandkids and even great-grandkids will stay and keep the family together.
Quite a few liked the fact that Walling had the backing of so many police organizations.
Just my observations from talking to people on the street in my neighborhood, the market, etc.. |
