Any bets on whether Williamson actually shows up?

Flint mayoral debate is onVoters will control the content and questions
Josh DeVine
FLINT (WJRT) - (10/24/07) -- On Monday, Dayne Walling and Don Williamson will appear in a live, one-hour debate that could be the defining moment in the race for Flint's top job.

Your questions will shape the showdown.

"It's very interesting. It's quite interesting," said Helen Johnson.

Dayne Walling and Don Williamson both want Flint's top political job.

A lot of questions stand in the way. "To see two candidates go at it like they are, for the city of Flint. It's a learning experience for me," Helen said.

"I want more fire protection," said Larry Johnson.

"Jobs is one of the main things," replied Helen.

"Other cities, when you say 'I'm from Flint,' yeah, 'The mayor and the city council, they don't get along.' That's nothing to be saying," Larry told ABC12's Josh DeVine.

In the course of a one-hour debate Monday, October 29. Walling and Williamson will likely tackle crime, the city's economy and strategies for the future.

"What's interesting is the expectations. I think the expectations are that Walling will be a better debater by far than Williamson. That may actually work to Walling's disadvantage. Williamson, if he doesn't fail in some big way, may ironically look like a success," said political analyst Paul Rozycki.

ABC12 will host the debate, moderated by WFUM-TV Station Manager Jennifer White. There won't be an audience, but each media outlet will solicit your ideas for questions, pool them and develop a final list to be tackled by the two.

"Both of them have a lot to offer," Larry said.

"It's like cutthroat. But I guess that's politics," said Helen.

"I think it's going to be a matter, on one hand, of Williamson showing his experience and competence and openness, and Walling's got to show that even though he's a young candidate, he's got the ability and maturity to handle the job," Rozycki observed.

You can watch the debates and engage in some healthy discussion, Monday night from 6:30 to 9:30 in the Michigan Rooms on the University of Michigan-Flint campus. Voters will make their final decision and elect the city's next mayor November 6.

I'm sure if The Don opens his mouth, it will be probably be the most interesting debate we've ever seen!

Since the Mayor is mentally incapable of responding with anything except threats, this might be fun. But I am willing to bet that as a precondition the questions have to be submitted to the campaigns first. No way Joe Conroy will let his Prison friend Williamson talk to the press unedited.

No bets on whether he'll show up, but the public may be in for surprise and disappointment.

a submitted Question:

"The Citizens of Flint supported a millage for Community Policing, yet our community police officers are answering patrol calls across the city and are rarely in their appointed communities to do proactive policing. Should the millage be reworded to support regular patrol officers or do you support true community policing?"

A usual request from the Williamson camp is a list of questions that will be asked. Not sure if that was approved.

The media that is promoting this has almost made it impossible for Don to not show up at the last minute as is his usual tactic.

After all DON laid the gauntlet by challenging Walling to a debate covered by all local stations. The stations stepped up and provided the format requested.
Interesting if he attends!

Each candidate should be asked how they will work with the school system to keep kids in school.

Interesting..this is the most valid subject to our city. City Officials should work with Flint- BOE to encourage enrollment and increase future home owners.

City of Flint has no jurisdiction in FCS ..would take to seperate bodies willing to work together.

Choke*^@# cough!

Asking Mayor Don to be involved in Flint Community Schools reminds me of the age old practice of bloodletting an extremely ill patient.

There is no real jurisdictional boundry when public "Goods" are involved, only budget constraints, risk, and where power can be exercised.

The schools are in Flint, Flint has a police department charged with enforcing federal, state laws and local ordaninces IN the Flint Public schools.

The City of Flint has a public saftey jurisdiction in the Flint Schools. To say that City Officals should not be concerned with the education of our children is incorrect.

Children dropping out of school to live a low income crime ridden life as their numbers increase impacts everyperson in flint.

If Public saftey or lack thereof has an impact on a childs staying in school then the City of Flint police department, [the Flint Board of educations does not have police],is important to the quality of education in the Flint school system.

To say Flint municipal government has no role flys in the face of basic doctrines and paridigms, in public admisistration.
1.negative spill overs, bad neighborhoods surrounding schools
2.marginal costs, saftey delivery is cheaper if you already have a police force.
3. fundamentally every thing a jurisdiction does to deliver a public good[education] is related negatively or positively to every public good sought to be delivered by intertwined or adjacent political jurisdictions attempts to deliver public goods[public saftey]

Bottom line I do not agree with you.

You can bet the school board would have a tantrum if the city tried to "move in". Politicians get very territorial about their turf. having power and being "in charge" are much more important to many than actually doing some good.
