DNR warns of cutbacks unless fees raised

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Dozens of parks will close, fish planting will be scaled back and fewer conservation officers will be on the job unless recreational licenses and fees are increased, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday. The DNR released a memo outlining a series of cutbacks — some beginning as early as Nov. 1 — that will be ordered if the state budget being negotiated by legislators includes no additional revenue for the department. None of the $1.3 billion in state tax increases approved earlier this month will go to the DNR, which draws less than 5 percent of its money from the general fund, the state's primary checkbook. More than 75 percent of the department's budget comes from licenses and fees for activities such as hunting, fishing and timber cutting.
A 1.3 billion INCREASE and no money for those darn hunters and fishermen as well as those weekend urban escapees. Lets see Michigans economy is heavily dependent on tourist dollars many of whom come here for just such activities, but I guess no one in Lansing considers that of any importance. Mi no.1 in lost jobs, lost workers and now lost tourists. Nice job Granholm.

I suppose Governor Granholm crying poor to the tune of $1.7 billion after she'd been in office 5 years was Engler's fault as well. |

As of 9/30/02, the State of Michigan General Fund
Fund Balance was $1,777,079,000 and the
"Counter-Cyclical Budget and Economic
Stabilization Fund" (more commonly known
as our "rainy day" fund was $145,150,000
for a total (unrestricted) Fund Balance of $1,922,229,000.
As of 9/30/06, the State of Michigan General Fund
Fund Balance was $1,069,240,000 and the "rainy
day" fund was $2,017,000 for a total of
$1,071,257,000, a DECREASE of almost
$851 million or 44.27%.
In other words, during Granholm's first four
years, she spent $851 million more than
she took in.

Did you ever notice how everytime some lib somewhere runs out of money even though in this case its a
1.3billion increase
they always blame someone else 99% of the time a Republican for their failed lib policys. Ill bet their aint no programs being cut in Wayne county but those darn hunters who probably translate into evil gunowners ,well who cares about them. We need to discourage our youths from partaking in such activities or so say libs like Granholm. Hey did you hear Harry Reid proclaim that the California fires are a direct result of Global Warming, which of course would be Bushs fault for not jumping on the Kyoto bandwagon and old Babs Boxer stating that the reason the fires are continuing is the lack of national guardsman not being there to fight them which of course is Bushs fault once again. What would she have them do stand in line and blow back against the santa anna winds and the fires which are being fueled by all the brush and dead trees that some enviromental whacko group protested the removal of for fear of disturbing a Kangaroo rat. Libs are a piece of work for sure.  |

I say again...come on, twotap...tell us how ya REALLY feel about it!
I also say, again, one of the many reasons I'm an EX-Democrat is the personal responsibility thing.
The thing that bothers me the most about the global warming hype is that I also used to be an environmental fanatic (waaaaay back in the teen years, brainwashed by liberal public school teachers). What they're telling us now is that everything we've done for the environment in the last 35 years (95+% reduced auto emissions, recycling, etc.) has all been for naught.
I will admit, though, that politically the left is positioned perfectly on this subject. If we melt, they will say "See...told ya so!" If the temperatures don't rise enough to cause the catastrophes they are predicting, they will say "See...we fixed it!" |

FC excellent job providing the facts that the libs never seem to find or conveniently overlook. A lib is never at fault for a failed program its always some damn right winger who denies em an increase to go with the funds already squandered. Of course it does not matter how many times their social schemes fail its the fact they tried that matters. Oh well let keep raising taxes and scaring businesses out of the state cause when its all said and done its Englers fault or their favorite Bushs fault. They sure do crawl back to their corner when ya give em a hard factual question though dont they.

I've thought a lot about what other countries are doing to the atmosphere. And we should pressure them to mend their ways. But it's our responsibility to be good stewards of what we have...and try to get others to do the same. It's not our responsibility to make up for others transgressions. |
