That's rather misleading, Ryan. As of 2006, Michigan was right in the middle of 'business tax climate' in the US. # 26. Just ahead of Massachusetts (#27) and well ahead of California (#40). California still manages to account for nearly 20% of the entire country's GDP. And both Massachesetts and California are leaders in the "transitioning to the new economy" race. The reason has more to do with their institutions of higher learning than business taxes. So we should be grateful that Michigan's universities weren't forced to bail out Engler's botched tax policies.

Okay, "Scenic Transportation"? is this construed as glass bottom boat rides in the UP? Wouldn't want to ride them anyway, stay at home mom (kinda), everytime I see a dirty window, I'd wanna clean it.......get rid of the shipwreck kinda thing going on.

Investment Advice? So now they are taxing the guy that manages my Roth? Um....Buy Low and Sell High!!! WooHoo........ahem.

Couriers and messengers, well after this tax going on, "Don't kill the messenger" will have a whole new meaning.

Janitorial-Not enough people use this anyway, if you drop it pick it up, if you get it out put it back, um, us stay at home moms could make a killing, easily!!!

Mini-warehouse and self-storage-Let me guess they looked into my garage and my neighbors McMansion garages, they have to store so much crap in there because they can never say no, to their children, they have to park their cars outside!! Thanks, now I will see their cars forever, since they won't be able to afford a storage unit......argh!!!

Carpet, upholstery installation and service -Well this solidified this, my puppy ruined the carpet, ain't gonna replace it anytime soon, anyone know how to make beagle carpets? (Kidding!!)

Transit and ground passenger (limousines, cabs) If I could afford a limo, why in the hell would I be driving around a paid for mom mobile.........feh!! Tax the rich!!! Wink

Office administration Yeah, let's put a tax on something that they can't find anyway, like some of my files at the hospital!!!! WooHoo!! ahem.

Other personal services Um, really don't want to venture to guess, hookers? Gigolos? Dancers? People that pick noses for a living?

Other travel and reservation services-this kind of falls under the Office Administration, would they pay for my tax on my vacation if it rained the whole time? Or my luggage was lost? Nah. They'd just recommend a crappy cruise!

Personal care, excluding haircuts-Oh thank Gawd, they left out taxing dead cells!!! Wouldn't want to encourage people to become Hippies.......sarcasm.

Security system services-Oh this is good ADT stock is gonna go down, great, mine is broken anyway, but be careful of my arthritic, yappy Pomeranian, he loves tendons, mostly in the ankle region!!!

Service contracts-Great more money for the lawyers to get out of us, aren't half of the people that we elected lawyers anyway?! (Sorry Terry, no offense)

Skiing-Anyone that puts two boards at the bottom of their feet and stands up at the top of a tall hill, wanting to go down the hill with the said boards at the bottom of their feet, deserve to be taxed.

Interior design We can all save money on this!!! If it doesn't look good, don't put it in your house, you can save bundles.

Tour operators-Save taxes on driving somewhere and looking out the window, why do you need someone to tell you where something is anyway?!

Consulting-Hiring someone to tell you what to do? Majority of us already have consultants, they are either your parents or your spouse, 'nuff said.

Packaging and labeling services-Um, if it doesn't fit in a box, don't use it, and while your at it grab a Sharpie!!

I think Silicon Valley has provided a significant boos to Cali like the Auto industry did for Michigan. With their high profit margins they can probably afford to pay millions of dollars a year extra to be in a nice climate.

Botched Tax policies?
http://www.michigan.gov/formergovernors/0,1607,7-212-31303-2273--,00.html

Governor Engler has signed 32 tax cuts into law, saving taxpayers nearly $32 billion. The state inheritance tax and capital gains taxes have been eliminated. Personal exemptions for children, seniors and the disabled have been increased. The personal income tax rate is being reduced to 3.9 percent -- the lowest level in a quarter century -- and Michigan's main tax on business is being phased out completely.

Engler's economic policies have helped to create more than 800,000 jobs in Michigan, cutting the state's unemployment rate from over 9 percent the year he took office to 3.4 percent in 2000 - the lowest annual level ever recorded. For an unprecedented five years in a row, Michigan has led the nation with the most new factories and expansion projects.. As part of the nation's most forward-looking economic development strategy, $1 billion is being invested in a "Life Sciences Corridor" from Ann Arbor to Grand Rapids, and a high-tech cybercourt to hear business disputes is also in the works. In addition, Governor Engler's NextEnergy initiative is positioning Michigan to be an international cluster of innovation in the development and commercialization of alternative energy technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells.

Governor Engler has strengthened Michigan's role as guardian of the Great Lakes, fought water diversions and invested more in clean water than any governor. Thanks to reforms of environmental laws, Michigan leads the nation in reclaiming contaminated brownfield sites while preserving green space and farmland.

Other highlights of the Engler administration include:

passing the $675 million Clean Michigan Initiative to reduce pollution, fix up state parks, improve water quality and clean up contaminated sites;

trimming state government personnel by more than 20 percent (excluding state troopers, prison guards and other public safety workers);

transforming the $1.8 billion deficit he inherited to a $1.3 billion surplus;
restoring Michigan's AAA credit rating;

helping nearly 300,000 families achieve independence from cash welfare and reducing welfare rolls by nearly 70 percent;

restructuring the regulation of energy and telecommunications industries to increase consumer choice and reduce rates;

investing a record-high $1.54 billion to fix our roads in 2001 alone - more than four times the amount spent in 1990;

reducing violent crime by more than 25 percent;
serving an additional 45,000 patients annually with mental health services;

giving Detroit's mayor authority to appoint the local school board and speed up the pace of reform;

increasing K-12 education spending by 84 percent; and,
dramatically improving student reading and math test scores.

There ya go again...quoting the left to make a leftist point.

From wikipedia..."the Metro Times has a liberal orientation."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_Times

"The Michigan Daily is the student newspaper of the University of Michigan."
(No liberals there)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_michigan_daily

Oh, and then an opinion piece written by Ralph Nader. He's certainly objective.

What has Granholm done for us?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate was 7.6% in August 2007 (highest in the nation). For historical reference, the lowest unemployment rate ever recorded in Michigan was 3.2% in March of 2000. Oh yeah...under John Engler.

http://www.bls.gov/web/lauhsthl.htm

Oh yeah....and the $1.35 billion tax increase.

And the new Michigan State Police Headquarters.

(Please note....again...I'm not using conservative sources to make a conservative point)

First, there is a lot more to "business friendly" than taxes. Second, this unprecedented massive tax increase will make Michigan more business friendly how?

There is more to being business friendly than simply taxes. There are also rules regulations etc. There are reasons why businesses generally prefer to go to "red states". Typically unions and trial lawyers support democrats. Manufacturing firms seem to prefer states with "Right to work" legislation. Trial lawyers can raise the costs of doing business in a state.

A lot of times when you take less of people money from them they go spend it at businesses which creates jobs. I personally feel that the government spends to much of my money.

If you run the numbers we should be dramatically be cutting government now before the actuarial nightmare really begins.

I agree. There is more to being 'business friendly' than business taxes. Things like an educated and skilled workforce, good schools, low crime, a clean and healthy environment and other considerations are (or should be) wieghed by business leaders before opening up shop anywhere. It's a little thing called 'quality of life.' And it's a proven fact that the business community would never, on its own, financially support public needs at the scale needed to effectively deliver fundamental, common good services to those who aren't lucky enough (or cold enough) to be labor exploitors or those who enable, encourage and otherwise benefit from their exploitation.
