GM, UAW Discuss Alternatives to Retiree Health Fund, People Say
2007-09-19 19:31 (New York)
By John Lippert and Jeff Green
Sept. 19 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp. and the United
Auto Workers are discussing alternatives to a proposed union-run
retiree health-care fund after the two sides couldn't agree on
how much money GM would provide to the trust, three people with
knowledge of the negotiations said.
The Detroit automaker is seeking to shed $50 billion in
future liabilities by transferring the responsibilities to the
union in exchange for a one-time payment to the fund, said the
people, who didn't want to be quoted because the talks are
private. Analysis of the issue continues and bargainers may
return to it later, the people said.
Failure to win UAW agreement for the retiree health-care
plan would be a significant setback for GM Chief Executive
Officer Rick Wagoner's plan to end losses that totaled $12.4
billion in 2005 and 2006.
GM spokeswoman Katie McBride had no comment. UAW spokesman
Roger Kerson didn't return phone calls seeking comment.
GM and the union are negotiating for a fifth day following
the scheduled Sept. 14 expiration of their four-year contract. |
