FLINT -- Mayor Don Williamson won the backing of the Greater Flint AFL-CIO Council, which announced its endorsement at a 5 p.m. press conference today.

The council includes AFSCME workers, which represents a majority of city workers.

"The election is over," Williamson said after the announcement.

In the Burton election, the union is backing Mayor Charles Smiley as well as Gary Isham, Thomas Martinbianco, Ralph LaDuke and Warren Nimcheski for City Council.

Sam Muma, president of city workers AFSCME Local 1600 and second vice president for the Greater Flint AFL-CIO, said the endorsements follow extensive interviews with the candidates.

"Don Williamson has the experience and the financial know how," Muma said.

Correction: Sam MUMA supports the mayor for reelection, but that is just because the Mayor has been being his special friend, hiring relatives and friends of Sam as an astounding rate.

The members of Local 1600 do not support Donald Williamson.
