Flint Journal thinks so:

Williamson-Walling race already historic

FLINT -- There is something missing for Flint voters: diversity.

For the first time since the city adopted a strong mayor form of government, both of Flint's mayoral nominees are white men. That covers eight general elections since 1975.

The victories of Mayor Don Williamson and challenger Dayne Walling on Tuesday are even more noteworthy given the fact Flint is a majority-minority city, with more than half of its population black.

It doesn't matter that both candidates are white. However, the Don is pandering to a majority of blacks, and though I can't prove it, I have heard plenty about how he compensates these blacks for voting for him and getting him votes. I find that unethical. Blacks statistically did not vote for the black candidates as much as you would have thought they would. That's alarming, considering the black candidates had more education and class than Williamson. It'ashame some blacks won't get up daily and look for work, yet enticements to vote will get them up at the crack of dawn. I'm not a racist, but I am tired of hearing minorities complain about being left out, when they continue to let some white politicians keep them oppressed. Williamson uses blacks for gain, and I'm smart enough to know he has to be compensating them somehow for their votes. So, when a black starts complaining about no black mayor for the election, I'll speak my mind and I am certain the blacks I work with and know, will agree with me. Classy, working blacks do not support Williamson, unless those same types of blacks are in city government looking for the Don to give them favors.

I didn't realize that trimming trees, cutting grass & brush around abandoned houses, and helping block clubs keep their neighborhoods looking better was unethical pandering.
How much of the hatred of Don is because he's not part of the Democratic party establishment?

Everyone should have civic pride and clean their properties of brush and debris. Absentee landowners should be fined heavily for not taking care of abandoned property, or that property should be forfeited for rehab. It is great to have your lawn cut and rid of unwanted weeds, debris, etc...but what about Williamson constantly promising jobs? Where are the jobs? As far as him not being a Democrat, who cares? I would just like to see this old lying felon get Flint on track. Bragging repeatedly about patching roads, and clearing property of unsightly debris is something most cities have a budget for. So if you're saying all you care about is a clean city, then maybe you should move to Palm Springs. The Don has done nothing but cost Flint millions in lawsuits and try to ruin the lives of otherwise innocent people who have to fight for their pensions, and fight accusations that never pan out to anything more than Williamson senile paranoia. I guess once a felon, you become suspicion of someone upping your scams.

No, I don't think Democrats are missing much without Williamson. We prefer thugs and felons to stay with the Republican party.

UNREAL!! I cant believe that a city the size of Flint, with mounting problems that the city has, that only 16% of registered voters would turn out on election day. In one of the most important elections in the Flint's history. What a total disgrace! The city should ashamed. The black community should be ashamed. They had a great opportunity to put the Hoodrow Stanley incident to rest and move forward to November by choocing one of two great leaders in Sheldon Neeley or Norm Bryant. Instead, those "few" blacks who bothered to get off the porch, voted in droves for Don Williamson. What has he secretly promised to the black citizens of Flint? Was Sandy Hill, Peggy Cook, Joe Conroy and Ethan Gonzales handing out ten dollar bills as people left the polls? Has be really done THAT MUCH for the citizens of Flint? Especially the black community? Someone please explain the appeal to me! Maybe I just dont get it. I just want to understand why the black community would waste this chance to move forward with Neely or Bryant, two outstanding members of the community who have served the city of Flint well for such a long time. Two men who would serve the black community as well as the entire city as a whole. Much better then Dandy Don!
The white community can take some responsibility here to! Its not like they "car pooled" the entire neighborhood to go vote either.
16% is an embarrasment and there is no excuse for it.
With skyrocketing unemployment, its not like everyone was at work or something! Whats Flints excuse?
Just another bitter pill for Flint to choke on!
The entire city should be ashamed!

Perhaps if we were a little more ashamed that about half of our Flint can't even buy a house 30% live in poverty 70% of kids don't graduate etc etc then people would have the money and education to get involved with politics and vote. It's hard to care about things like politics when the more pressing issue is how much money is left on the bridge card. When I go grocery shopping I'm about the only person who doesn't have a bridge card.

I'd be surprised if 50% of people in Flint even know we have a city charter.

Agreed. But that seems to be the norm these days. If its local [school, city] it seems people can't get motivated to vote, even though this, the local level is THE LEVEL where their lifes can be most directly affected on a day to day basis. Strangely, more people come out for the state/national elections yet the people we elect then are more diluted in what effect they can play for us directly. They are just one of hundreds being elected. Ironic.

Unfortunately they split the vote. Had ONE of them run, I am confident they would have finished either first or second. Add their two votes together.

Al, the price has gone up, its at least worth a Jackson for the dons vote. You may have missed an earlier article about the don's office holder expense account, where he handed out over $31K to churches, community groups etc. There is your answer. Several churches got $1k donations made by the don. From 30 pieces of silver to $1,000. The price of betrayal has gone up.
Oh and that's Ehren Gonzales. Don't want to offend any Ethan Gonzales' out there.

The $64 question. The people, ultimately will answer it or, answer for it by not voting.

well you can see from the precinct breakdowns the predominately white wards voted overwhelming for white candidates only. The black wards less so for their own candidates. Predominantly the donald's influence however.

The city remains one of the most segregated in the country.

However, a la Clinton, it would not surprise me if the don gets some black leader to proclaim him "THE BLACK candidate" between he and Walling.

He's already on record as trying to establish some native american ancestry when he was trying to land a casino deal.

Don't put anything past the guy.

The Don may claim his Chippewa ancestry with this satrical article which appeared last year in The Uncommon Sense:

Al, Al, Al, why should the black community be ashamed that a black person
wasn't elected in the primary? Could it be possible that most blacks simply
felt like voting for whom they deemed the best candidate? Could it be they
are tired of the race-baiting crap this town has been known for? I voted for
Don and hell, I've never met the man!! Is it remotely possible that black
folks have memories of how Flint was? Is it possible they like having nice
roads, parks, houses and city services? Is it also possible we understand
Rome wasn't built in a day? Ashamed........Hell no i'm not ashamed!

is that why Clinton was designated the first "black" president by several influential leading black leaders? Because they couldn't speak for themselves?

you didn't note the specific nuance, that between Walling and the don, that the donald wielding the power of largesse, will get several influential [mostly religious] black leaders to come out and designate him as the best candidate for the black community, thus the "black candidate".

thats my prediction and I am sticking to it.

no condescension intended, just extrapolating the donald's influence into the black communities of Flint versus Walling's.

i don't give a hoot about what some clown in another city said about clinton.
the fact is, blacks (leaders[?] or not) will speak for BOTH candidates when the time comes. do you believe that when some blacks speak up for Walling that will make him the "black candidate"? utter nonsense. neither one of them will be a so-called "black candidate", they will simply be a candidate some black folks voted for, just like the whites, hispanics, greens and purples!! This is my prediction...and i approve this message. Laughing
