#40 How can Flint warm up to the Colleges?

By: Terry Bankert 04.26.05

On 4/25/05 I attended the Flint Area Public Affairs Debate " Cool Cities: How can Flint warm up to the colleges. This event was held at the International Institute 515 Stevens Flint MI USA.

This was the final program in a four part series entitled " Critical Issues for Michigan What Can Government Do?"

Willam Rustem, President and CEO of Public Sector Consultants stated:[1]Focus on land use with an inter governmental coordination.,[2] all cities except two in Michigan have declined, Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids.[3] The two growth cities did so because they slowed their land use development and were attactive to 25-30 year olds.

Betsy Homsher, Associate Dean of Students and Director of Women student affairs at Kettering University stated:[1]25,000 college students attend in the Flint area spending 250.00 per month in disposable income but many return to their home communities nightly or on the weekends to spend that money.[2]Flint must change its perspective of being unsafe and with nothing to do.[3] Flint must promote the good things, let the community know.We do not capitalize on our strengths.

William Webb, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Adminstration. University of Michigan stated: [1] There is system of development that is in play downtown that is good, Upton Reinvestment, University and others. [2] The Flint campus has had 18 yr of flat enrollment. [3] Flint needs a unifying vision, where are we going? [4]Flint needs to promote unity, think long term 3-5 years.[4] Flint must provide a city that people feel comfortable with.

Ridgeway White project manage Upton Developments spoke of the downtown projects.

Sean McCann Kalamazoo City Commissioner spoke of the efforts made in Kalamazoo to service the college community.

The crowd , about 100, voice overall disattisfaction with Flint City government. No council persons were in attendance. I was the only city council candidate present.

Again I observe that Flint area leaders want leadership in the City that they can trust to lead with dignity and committment to community service. The community wants a plan and good people to help develop it.
