'Black Guerrilla Family' Gang Reportedly Targeting On-Duty NYPD Officers

By Kathryn Schroeder, Sun, December 07, 2014

Members of the Black Guerrilla Family gang have allegedly threatened to shoot on-duty New York police officers.

The threat comes in the wake of the Eric Garner grand jury decision wherein NYPD police officer Daniel Pantaleo, who put Garner in the 'chokehold' that led to his death, would not be indicted.

The New York Daily News reports that the “hit” against NYPD officers was learned about by an undercover cop on the evening of Friday, Dec. 5. The threat was confirmed the next evening by Homicide officers.

Ten Black Guerrilla Family members are reportedly involved in the threat.

"I have just received information of a credible threat to SHOOT an on duty police officer. It appears this is an organized action .... Please WEAR your VEST and carry your firearm off-duty along with additional magazines,” a letter circulated to officers by Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins said. “Your priority is to go home at the end of your tour!”

Mullins does not think the threat is directly related to the Garner decision.

“I think it’s related to the whole atmosphere,” Mullins said. “Who knows if there’s a lone wolf out there or a small group that wants to do something.”

The Black Guerrilla Family was formed in California’s San Quentin Prison in the late 1960s. SIlive reports that the group has historical ties to the Black Panther movement.

Members swear their allegiance for life and have “BGF” tattoos, as well as ink of a dragon surrounding a prison tower. The Black Guerrilla Family currently operates on the East Coast and Maryland, where members are involved in drug trafficking in the Baltimore prison system.
