I enjoyed a chance meeting at lunch with one of my favorite veterans advocates.

The main topic of discussion was how the county commissioners lied and manipulated the contract for the veteran cards. It seems the county, including Curtis and the head of the veterans department, told Gleason they supported him in his efforts to simplify the issuance of veterans cards. Gleason is required to maintain the copies of the vets documents and handicapped and senior veterans would only have to go to his office to have a card issued. This card was designed to simplify a veterans status and they would not have to carry all of their documents with them. Gleason already had the software that could be used to produce the card.

During the commission meeting, the commissioners switched their decision to the veterans office, leaving advocates and Gleason stunned. Five months later the veterans still have no cards. In most instance they must go to Gleason's office and then to another building for the veterans office. No one stop operation. A difficult maneuver for handicapped and senior veterans. Also includes finding two parking spaces.

My advocate friend angrily said the commissioners just hate Gleason. He just may be on to something!

Bailey seems to be the most hostile. He lost an election to Gleason years ago and some say the resentment ever left. He has angrily denounced Gleason over the costs of the lawsuits involving Gleason.

Curtis thinks he can angrily chastise other elected officials even when they are involved in lawsuit with ne another. How about some civility?

What about the lawsuits involving Bogardus and Cherry? Time after time the commissioners try to overstep their roles. They lose the lawsuits and waste money.

Military vets face some hardships once they get out of the service, one of the greatest being just attempting to land a job. Unemployment is higher than normal for veterans , but the great news is that numerous employers are employing vets. Providing our vets with sustainable work, good salaries and opportunities for advancement, working in the private sector, is the least we can do.

Michigan Vets to Ag Program
Opportunities exist for employers seeking to fill vacancies with skilled military veterans. Let us assist in the process of screening and recruiting, along with providing customer-tailored training to accommodate your employment needs.
Veterans Hiring Guide
The guide provides a central location for tools and business incentives. Our goal is to help employers find job-seeking Veterans or assist with ongoing efforts with Veteran hiring programs. We have also included key resources for employers seeking to attract military spouses. We have worked this closely with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to reach employers, and model strong public/private partnerships. We gathered input from the Departments of Defense, Labor and Education. This guide is a great refresh of a 2012 hiring guide developed and published by the White House Business Council, but includes many more resources (especially VA's) for private sector employers interested in hiring Veterans.
Work Opportunity Tax Credit Program
The WOTC is available to private-for-profit employers who hire from specific targeted groups of people that have in the past experienced difficulty in securing employment. Under the VOW Act of 2011, tax credits for hiring veterans were temporarily expanded.

More information for employers is available from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

Job Fairs and Career Resources Fairs
Are you seeking to fill positions and considering the many benefits of hiring a veteran? Employers that conduct job fairs or participate in them can connect with skilled and talented veteran candidates. If you're interested in advertising a job fair, please visit our Job Fairs page, or contact your closest Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist.
