Student Arrested After Cutting Food With Knife
10-Year-Old Charged With Possession Of Weapon On School Property

POSTED: 3:40 pm EST December 14, 2007
UPDATED: 4:08 pm EST December 14, 2007

An elementary student in Marion County was arrested Thursday after school officials found her cutting food during lunch with a knife that she brought from home, police said.

The 10-year-old girl, a student at Sunrise Elementary School in Ocala, was charged possession of a weapon on school property, which is a felony.

According to authorities, school employees spotted the girl cutting her food while she was eating lunch and took the steak knife from her.

The girl told sheriff's deputies that she had brought the knife to school on more than one occasion in the past.

Students told officials that the girl did not threaten anyone with the knife.

The girl was arrested and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

It's easy to ridicule this. In fact, that was my first inclination. I thought the school is being typical idiots and should take everything into consideration. Right? I mean, I have a 10 year-old daughter and I would be furious if they suspended her for that. But then I got to thinking – hello! What kind of parents send their kid to school with a steak knife?! And just what the heck did they pack in her lunch – a tree trunk? Suspend the parents, I say! Better yet – send them back to fifth grade!

I thought perhaps the "Educators" might show a little common sense by taking the knife from her and reminding her that they are not allowed. And contact the parents as to what transpired. But of course common sense is lacking in schools much like everywhere else nowdays. Cuff her and take her to the slammer ya that oughto learn her. Congradulations you are now a 10 yr old felon. Rolling Eyes As far as what she was packing for lunch at least she had one Wink

Good point, twotap. I hadn't thought of the fact that at least the parents packed her a lunch. Of course, I wonder if they bailed her out of jail.

Parents got the zero tolerance policies they demanded.

<Shrug> What do you expect when you take decsions out of the hands of the school administration?

Zero Tolerance = loss of commonsense. And another reason why home schooling is such a common, popular and wise practice. Of course it could all have been avoided if her parents had raised her to be a vegeterian. Very Happy

Charges dropped against steak knife girl

Last Edited: Wednesday, 26 Dec 2007, 3:49 PM EST

A 10-year-old Marion County girl is still trying to grasp the news she might never be allowed back at school. Last week the girl was eating her steak lunch in the cafeteria at Sunrise Elementary School in Ocala. Two school employees saw her using a knife for her steak. They took it and called police and now the girl is facing a felony charge and is not allowed back in school. SideBar

Girl charged, brings knife to school to cut steak

OCALA, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities have dropped a felony weapons charge against a 10-year-old girl in Ocala who brought a kitchen knife to school to cut up her lunch.

The girl, whose name has not been released, was arrested after teachers at Sunrise Elementary School saw her use a 41/2-inch knife on a steak. She was also suspended from school for three days.

After reviewing her school record and interviewing her, investigators with the Department of Juvenile Justice recommended that the State Attorney's Office not prosecute the child. The attorney's office agreed.

Assistant State Attorney Ric Ridgway told the Orlando Sentinel that nothing in the girl's school history suggested she was a troubled child.

And it only took em 12 days to come to that conclusion. Rolling Eyes I heard on another forum that she was actually cutting up a steak served in the school cafeteria. Sounds like they need to buy better cuts of meat maybe something that can be handled with just a fork. Of course its common knowledge that trying to consume too large a chunk of steak posing a real threat of choking. By the way schools serving steak. Jeez I remember beany weiney and something called "Tuna Cheese surprise" Shocked but steak? Times have changes. Laughing

I myself would not have sent my kid to school with a steak knife, but the school should open the book of common sense. I think the right way to handle it would have been to take the knife away, and call the parents. Some of the schools have gotten way out of hand, and it's going to take more parents standing up to some of the B.S. that they try to pull. I know of another incident at a school in my area where 2 students were in class, one student tossed his pencil with a good eraser on it to the other student so he could use the eraser. The student who tossed the pencil was given 4 weeks of saturday school as punishmnet for "throwing a sharp object". Another case in the school where my son goes had a fund raiser that they have had for a couple of years. The students who gave $20 to this fundraiser got excused from school for half a day, while the students who didn't had to go to school for a whole day. Totally unfair to those kids who came from families who couldnlt afford it. It took parents of students raising the B.S. flag to end it, but they did.

Very true, LTH. Not only that, but if I were the parent of the fundraiser incident, I'd have told my kid to skip school all day and just pray for whoever the fundraiser was for! Laughing Laughing Laughing

Ban those pencils. Shocked Shocked Actually I witnessed a fight between two guys and when it was over one turned his back to walk away and his opponent jumped him from behind and buried a nice sharp pencil in his chest. Guess the fight was not quite over. Laughing

I saw a fight where a guy stabbed another guy with a pencil, but only to find he had stepped in dog crap. Which only goes to prove - if you use a #2 as a weapon, chances are you’ll step in it, too! Laughing Laughing Laughing
