FLINT, MI -- A Davison man was ordered to spend 15 years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to being an armed career criminal after authorities discovered a number of guns stolen during home invasions in his vehicle.

Michael Dieonte Roche, 36, was also ordered to serve two years of supervised release in a judgment entered Thursday, Nov. 14, by Flint U.S. District Judge Mark A. Goldsmith.

Roche was stopped Jan. 21 by a Lapeer County Sheriff deputy on suspicion of attempted burglary, according to court records. Roche gave permission for the deputy to search the vehicle and informed the deputy that there was a shotgun and rifle in the back of the vehicle.

A Michigan State Police trooper assisted in the stop and found two shotguns in the back of the vehicle: an unloaded 12-gauge and a loaded 20-gauge, according to court records. The 12-gauge was reported stolen earlier that day from a home on Hosner Road in Dryden Township while the 12-gauge was reported stolen that day from a home on Casey Road in Dryden Township.

Authorities also discovered other items reported stolen during recent burglaries, according to court records.

The deputy discovered Roche had several previous felony convictions, arrested him and obtained a warrant to better search the vehicle.

Officers found more stolen items during the search, including a .357 magnum revolver stolen earlier that day from a different residence on Hosner Road in Dryden Township and a 9-millimeter semi-automatic pistol stolen from a Clinton County home on Jan. 15.

The two handguns were found hidden in the engine compartment of the vehicle, according to court records.

Roche is currently serving an 8 year, 4 month to 15 year sentence at the state's St. Louis Correctional facility for three counts of second-degree home invasion for the Jan. 21 incidents.

State records show Roche has served time in prison previously for four counts of second-degree home invasion in Genesee County in 2007 and attempted safe breaking in Genesee County in 2007. HE also has a 2002 conviction of possession of marijuana and a 2012 conviction of larceny and receiving and concealing stolen property.

Check out Genesee County Scanners as they reported 2 shootings early this morning on the southside. First possible shooting was in the 100 block of Tobias. The second was on Leland and Tuxedo where a very lucky 19 year old male had a bullet skim the side of his head instead of entering his brain.

I noticed all kinds of new graffiti along Fenton Road Friday morning south of 12th. The South Side Bloods keep calling out the Crips.

FLINT, MI -- Police have identified Wesley Garth Gillmore as the 16-year-old who was shot and killed around 4 a.m. Sunday on East Tobias Street on the city's south side.

Lt. Brian Cole of the Michigan State Police said he'd learned that Gillmore recently moved to Flint from Pontiac.

Michigan State Police and Flint Police are conducting a joint, ongoing investigation. There are no declared suspects at this time, but Cole said they are confident they will find who committed the murder.

"What we need now, is we need people (who were here) to come forward," Cole said.

Lee Knorr, 56, who lives near the scene said she was awakened early this morning by arguing that appeared to be coming from the street. She said she then heard someone count, "1, 2, 3," followed by popping.

"And then I heard a girl start screaming," she said. "She was crying and saying, 'Please tell me this isn't happening.'"

"It's not something we expect (in this area)," Knorr said. "Normally this is a very quiet street."

Detectives are asking anyone with information regarding this homicide to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-Jail.

Flint reaches 50 homicides for fourth consecutive year with slaying of teen
t
David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com
on November 18, 2013 at 6:00 PM

FLINT, MI – For the fourth consecutive year, Flint has hit the 50-homicide mark.

The city, however, is behind a pace that would see it break last year's record 67 homicides. Last year, Flint had 62 homicides in mid-November.

In the past four years, the homicide record was set in 2010 with 66 and again last year with 67.

Flint Mayor Dayne Walling, however, said his concerns extend beyond numbers.

"I am more concerned about the loss of every life than any statistic," he said. "The fact that there have been fewer homicides this year is little comfort to the victims' families."

The city reached 50 homicides about 4 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, when Wesley Garth Gillmore, 16, was shot and killed on East Tobias Street on the city's south side. Police said Gillmore had recently moved to Flint from Pontiac.
Chief James Tolbert said on Monday that police hope to obtain a warrant from the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office charging someone with the slaying within the next day or so. He declined to say if there was anyone in custody.

He said the shooting occurred after an argument with a group of people who were possibly intoxicated.

A man who answered the door where the slaying took place said Gillmore was one of his closest friends but declined to comment further.

Tolbert said so many homicides should not be happening.

"There has to be a value on life," he said. "A lot of (the homicides) would be prevented if there were some simple conflict resolution."

A Flint pastor says city officials aren't approaching the city's homicide problem the right way.

Pastor Robert McCathern of Joy Tabernacle Church in Flint said the homicide problem needs to be viewed as a public health issue.

"We're still old school and out of touch with most of America that's really trying to deal with it in a public health way," he said.

Young people need to be prevented from joining the criminal lifestyle and those that are already in the lifestyle need intervention and conflict resolution, said McCathern. The youth also need to have supervised activities available, he said.

"If you put a farm kid out on a farm and leave him by himself he is going to play with whatever is out there – he is going to play with a tractor, a pitchfork, whatever he can find," said McCathern. "In urban America, our young men are playing with what's accessible, and what is accessible is guns. There are too many guns."

The Michigan State Police has about 40 troopers either patrolling the city or working in the detective bureau. Walling said that collaboration along with others needs to continue.

"We have to continue to work together to prevent crime so that each year gets better from here forward so fewer families are affected by violence," he said.

Staff writer Molly Young contributed to this report.

Avengers Motorcycle Club member pleads guilty after cops find illegal guns while investigating wife's homicide

FLINT, MI -- A member of the Avengers Motorcycle Club has pleaded guilty to federal charges after authorities discovered illegal guns in his Flint home while investigating the death of his wife.

Frank Bartels pleaded guilty Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Flint U.S. District Court to being a felon in possession of a firearm after authorities discovered multiple illegal firearms in his south side home in early 2012.

Bartels' attorney, Southfield-based Leon J. Weiss, could not be reached for comment.

Police were called Jan. 13, 2012, to Bartels' home on Van Buskirk Street regarding the possible suicide of his wife, Shane Bartels. Bartels handed officers a hand-written note that he said he found in the basement of his home, according to court records.

Police found the death suspicious and secured a search warrant for the home where they discovered a stolen .410-caliber pistol, a sawed-off shotgun, a semi-automatic .22-caliber rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun, court records show.

Police also discovered a leather vest for the Avengers, which is labeled as a gang in 2011 national threat gang assessment by the FBI.

Bartels was interviewed by police and acknowledged that the firearms were in the basement. He also admitted that he encouraged fellow Avengers member Raymond Scarbrough to falsify an affidavit and claim that some of the firearms were purchased by another person, according to court records.

Scarbrough is currently awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to a federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was arrested after selling a TEC-9 pistol to a confidential informant in the parking lot of McDonald's on Stewart Avenue.

Police initially called Shane Bartels' death suspicious, but they later ruled the death a homicide. The cause of death was asphyxiation. No charges were ever filed related to the death.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the death remains under investigation.

Bartels is scheduled to be sentenced March 4. His plea agreement calls for him to serve less than five years in prison.

Scarbrough is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 5.

Flint man gets prison time for role in two meth lab explosions

FLINT, MI -- A Flint man said before he was sentenced to prison for his role in two methamphetamine lab explosions that leaving the military was the worst decision of his life.

Keith William Boyce Jr., 38, was sentenced Monday, Nov. 18, by Genesee Circuit Judge Archie Hayman to serve 3-20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty for a meth lab explosion that occurred April 16 on the city's north side. Genesee Circuit Judge Joseph Farah issued a second 3-20 year sentence for a meth lab explosion July 24 on the 3000 block of Woodrow Avenue on the city's east side.

The force of the 1 a.m. April blast blew a hole in the outside wall of the apartment at Rollingwood Manor apartment complex on Boulevard Avenue and East Pierson Road.

An entire wall of the apartment was blown off. Glass, siding and drywall all blew out onto the sidewalk and yard. Neighbors described the incident as if a bomb exploded.

Authorities found two one-pot meth labs made with pop bottles along with other meth components in the apartment. They said they believe a 16- or 20-ounce bottle was the source of the explosion.

Boyce's attorney, Justin Henry, said his client would have been eligible to retire from the military next year if he would have remained in the service, but instead he will now be locked up in a state prison.

"I apologize to everyone in the apartment," Boyce said. "People's lives were at risk."

Firefighters responded to the Woodrow Avenue home around 8:30 a.m. July 24 and had to force open the door to get to the fire that started in the northwest bedroom of the home. Officials say a wall and window of the home were blown out by the explosion.

Police found 2-liter bottles filled with lye and other chemicals in a shed behind the home. There was no power in the house, but jumper cables were hooked up to electrical wires inside the home.

Boyce allegedly told law enforcement officials that he had used the same two-liter bottle too many times to produce methamphetamine through the one-pot method and that led to the explosion.

MT. MORRIS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -
(11/22/13) - A bold break-in at an elderly woman's home, in Mt. Morris Township Wednesday morning, ended with four people arrested at a home in Flint.

The woman, who is 82, was at home and sleeping the entire time though she may have heard a noise and initially ignored it, according to police.

Mt. Morris Township Police are in the process of seeking charges against two of the four arrested, the two others were released pending further investigation, and say they could be connected to two similar break-ins from the summer.

"It's consistent with two other home invasions we had involving elderly citizens," said Mt. Morris Township Police Lt. Matt Lasky.

Police say all involved elderly people, entry was forced, the crimes occurred overnight or early in the morning and a vehicle was stolen.

Wednesday, officers used OnStar to help track the stolen car. They found it about a mile away from the woman's home on Mott Ave., near Doran St., at a home in Flint.

"We used OnStar to get us close into the area," Lasky said. "We were able to use surveillance units to locate the vehicle at a specific address."

Lasky said some of the woman's things were at the home. Officers also found a gun.

When will FANG and/or Flint address the large heroin dealers in Flint? They seem unable or unwilling to address this issue.
