Plea agreement reached for alleged Flint carjacker who was shot by victim

By Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com
on February 05, 2013 at 6:30 PM, updated February 05, 2013 at 6:33 PM

FLINT, MI -- A Flint man who police say was shot by his alleged victim during a carjacking last year now faces multiple years in state prison.
Leo Ricardo Stringer, 18, pleaded no contest Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, to an amended charge of unarmed robbery and felony firearms. The unarmed robbery charge carries a potential maximum of 15 years in prison and the felony firearm charges a mandatory two-year prison sentence.

The agreement allows Stringer to avoid risking a carjacking conviction that could have landed Stringer life in prison.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said Stringer was transported to Hurley Medical Center for the gunshot wound sustained during the February 2012 carjacking but his luck didn't improve at the city hospital.

While receiving treatment at the hospital, Stringer was identified by one of the nurses working on him as the person that robbed her two weeks prior.

The nurse, who was visiting from out-of-town, had been robbed in a parking lot near Hurley, Leyton said.

Leyton said the nurse recused herself from treating Stringer after she identified him.

Charges were filed against Stringer for robbing the nurse but were dismissed, according to court records.

23-year-old man charged with murder in Flint arrested in South Carolina

By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com
on February 06, 2013 at 10:10 AM

FLINT, MI -- A 23-year-old man who was charged in the August 2011 slaying at a Flint gas station was arrested Tuesday in South Carolina, according to authorities there.
Antonio Demond Watkins was charged with murder in the killing of 27-year-old Sunta Newman on Aug. 30, 2011, at a gas station on Saginaw Street near Leith Street. The two were arguing when Watkins allegedly shot Newman in the head, police said at the time.

He was charged with the crime a few days later.

On Tuesday, Watkins was arrested on St. Helena Island, S.C., in the woods after he fled from a residence when he saw police coming, said Amanda Lyons, public information officer for the U.S. Marshal's Office.

Lyons said "general information" came into authorities and he was found after officers showed pictures and conducted interviews with people in the area. Lyons said Watkins had no known ties to the area.

Watkins is lodged in the Beaufort County Jail awaiting extradition.

Flint man sentenced to prison for 2012 fatal shooting at liquor store

By Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com
on February 06, 2013 at 7:00 PM, updated February 06, 2013 at 7:02 PM

FLINT, MI -- A Flint man with a lengthy criminal history was sentenced to prison after authorities said he shot and killed a man at a liquor store in 2012.
John Isaac Boddie Jr., 56, was sentenced to 6 years to 18 years, 6 months in prison for the July 2012 killing of Clarence Stewart at the Quick Pick liquor store near the corner of Glenwood and Court on the city's west side.

Boddie pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in January. He was originally charged with open murder, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm.

He could have faced life in prison.

Attorney Jeffrey Clothier, who represented Boddie, said his client stood silent when he was sentenced by Genesee Circuit Judge Geoffrey Neithercut Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Clothier argued that his client acted in self-defense and the defense of others when he shot Stewart in the leg.

Boddie was inside the liquor store when a friend began making disrespectful comments to two women at the store, Clothier said.

The women left the store but soon returned with Stewart and another man as Boddie and his friend drank outside the store.

Clothier said Stewart punched Boddie's friend. Fearing the man had a gun, Clothier said, Boddie responded by firing a shot into the air and into Stewart's leg. Police said Stewart was shot four times.

Boddie has previous convictions of assault with intent to rob while armed, armed robbery and felonious assault.

He had served roughly 30 years in prison.

Far too many home invasions and B&E's. sadly FPo reported a homeowner in the 2000 block of kansas attcacked by an intruder wielding a crowbar as man tried to protect very young grandchild. A commenter to the site claimed the K9 dog took police to a known drug house on Nebraska. Thanfully the intruder was apprehended.

Seems like a number of the apprehended criminals lately are in their 50's and are not the young.

2900 block of Carr is probably the Kearsley Lakeview Apartments. There's always something going on there.

Flint man pleads guilty to role in Howard Boys gang racketeering conspiracy

By Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com
on February 11, 2013 at 4:00 PM, updated February 11, 2013 at 4:01 PM

FLINT, MI -- A Flint man has pleaded guilty to his role in the Howard Boys street gang, which prosecutors said used violence to control the drug trade on the city's south side.

Markus G. Evans, 24, entered the plea to one count of participating a racketeering conspiracy Feb. 5 in front of Flint Federal District Judge Mark A. Goldsmith.

Evans could face up to 20 years in prison when sentenced June 4.

Prosecutors had also charged Evans with multiple drug and gun crimes but those were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Evans admitted that he was a member in the gang beginning in 2002 and that he and other members distributed cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana and guns.

He also admitted that gang members used violence -- including murder -- to protect their enterprise.

Court records show that Evans distributed more than 1.48 kilograms of crack cocaine during his time in the gang.

Evans has previous convictions of possession of less than 25 grams of cocaine and attempted carrying a concealed weapon.

Federal authorities announced charges against a dozen men in May 2012 for their suspected role in the gang.

Charges range from selling guns and drugs to racketeering and murder.

Evans is the second suspect to reach a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Malcolm J. Evans pleaded guilty Dec. 20 to participating in the racketeering conspiracy.
