Flint sees a deadly start to 2013 with three homicides, one suspicious death
David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com By David Harris | dharris5@mlive.com
January 10, 2013 at 6:15 PM, updated January 10, 2013 at 6:16 PM

FLINT, MI – The city has seen a deadly start to the year with three homicides and one suspicious death.

The latest came about 12:40 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, outside a home on Sterling Street near Sonny Avenue. Police were called to the scene and found a man with gunshot wounds and unresponsive in a driveway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no suspect information.

Neighbor Tony Jackson, 55, was watching TV at home when he heard shots, followed by screams.

"I heard a girl screaming 'Oh my God there's someone in the street,'" he said. "I opened the door and he was lying in the driveway."

Jackson said he didn't know the man killed.

Police identified the man as Emziah Sudberry Jr., 49.

He said his teenaged daughter was shaken up by the slaying and that there are often shots fired in the area at night.

"We try to stay in the house after dark," he said. "This is the Merrill Hood. It's dangerous."

The slaying came two days after a woman was found by a passerby just before 8 a.m. in the driveway of a vacant house at the corner of Brunswick and Paddington avenues.

Detectives on scene said it was an apparent homicide, but said an autopsy would have to confirm the manner and cause of death. The woman, who was not identified, was in her mid-20s to mid-30s, police said. There were signs of trauma on her body, although police declined to say what the injuries were.

The autopsy was expected to be completed Wednesday, but the results have yet to be released.

Police have also called the Jan. 3 death of a 16-year-old boy suspicious . He was found in the basement of a home with a gunshot wound, according to police.

Police declined to give his name, but his father identified him as Richard A. Wallace II.

His father, Richard A. Wallace Sr., 36, said police have not told him exactly what happened to his son, but said he believes it was a homicide and not a suicide.

The younger Wallace attended Mott Middle College with a focus on sociology. He also wanted to become an entertainer and enjoyed playing sports.

"It was a great loss," he said. "It shows that life is short."

Just hours into the New Year, 16-year-old Shukur Brown is accused of accidentally shooting and killing his friend Gianni Herron, 15 , at a home on Chevrolet Avenue. He was charged on Tuesday with second degree murder.

The first homicide of 2012 – a record tying year that ended with 66 homicides – didn't come until Jan. 11.

"That's something the community and the police need to together on," said Flint Police Chief Alvern Lock. "The police are not going to be the (only) solution; the police are going to be part of the solution."

Anyone with information on any of the incidents is asked to call Flint police at 810-237-6801 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-800-422-JAIL.
