Residents complaining "many incidents are not being reported?" Not being reported to the police, or not being reported by the volunteers monitoring and reporting scanner traffic on various Facebook pages? There aren't enough volunteers to staff at least 3 Facebook pages reporting now, let alone any one of them. There's been an obvious decrease of posting on the one that was most popular. The new page you mention is more social.

Tell your residents they can listen to the scanners online themselves without all the chitchat and unnecessary comments allowed on Facebook scanner pages. Just go to the source, http://moses.bz/scanners/ and select the one they want monitored. Better getting the information first hand anyway. The one for Genesee County North should be the 25P911N.

Individuals tell me they are being disrespected by 911. They insist the operators have told them "What do you expect us to do?" They have been told to "just lie on the floor until it is over" . They don't need 911 for that response as they are often calling from the floor. They are repeatedly told there is no one to respond. Many have decided to stop calling the police because they never see a police response. I guess there goes the "see something, say something".

There may be a turf battle in the area of Metawaneenee as there are a number of recent gun battles and drive-by shootings. Many good residents are stating they just want out and are willing to take the loss on their homes to leave. This is theoretically a future development area.

Actually there is a persistent urban legend that some residents are being forced out because individuals in power are paying gangs to intimidate them so that their area can be redeveloped. Almost like the old wild west movies.

They are referring to the media. Their argument is that more violence and crime is occurring than is being reported. They believe it is a deliberate attempt to hide the extent of the problem.

When has the media ever reported more than a small fraction of the crimes in Flint ? The public would be horrified if they knew all that goes on here in the way of assaults,B&E's,CSC's,ect. My concern,is that in addition to not reporting some major crimes they spend time reporting on minor crime as if that is what is occurring in Flint.I find it deceptive and missleading.

Clearly the people of Flint need to know what the police will respond to and what they won't. No response for scrappers, people being robbed, or to check on a disabled person. WTF They will no send the police when you see someone breaking in a neighbors house. 911 says the homeowner has to call. They will not send police when you see a house being scrapped, they say the home owner has to call. They will not check on a disabled person who has not answered the phone for days and may be dead in their house. WTF PEOPLE NEED TO FIGHT THIS CRAP AND NOT GIVE UP. THEY THINK WE WILL FORGET, WHEN I LEAVE THIS TOWN I WILL NEVER FORGET THE INJUSTICE I SEE THAT IS TARGETED AT DECENT TAXPAYERS.

Diane McClara So tell them you heard gunfire from the house getting scrapped.. The person that won't answer the phone tell them you smell a really bad Oder out side the door

Victim of Evergreen Regency double shooting may have pulled gun on shooter, court documents claim
Print Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com By Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com The Flint Journal

on May 09, 2013 at 6:30 PM

FLINT, MI -- One of of the victims in a double shooting Sunday, May 5, at the Evergreen Regency apartment complex may have pulled a gun on the alleged shooter during a dispute, according to court records.
An affidavit filed Tuesday, May 7, in Flint U.S. District Court by a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent details the events of the shooting that sent two people to the hospital in critical condition.

The affidavit was filed as part of a felon in possession of a firearm investigation against the alleged shooter. He has not been arraigned or indicted on the complaint.

No charges have yet been filed in the Evergreen shooting and the shooting remains under investigation.

Michigan State Police officials say both shooting victims survived. One is still listed in critical condition, according to Hurley officials.

Flint police responded around 6:30 p.m. May 5 to the apartment complex off Lippincott Road, between Dort Highway and Center Road, and learned two people had been shot.

According to the affidavit, the accused shooter told police he was at the apartment complex visiting friends when he began talking with two women. A short time later a group of unknown men "came out of nowhere and sat near the apartment where he and the females were talking."

The accused shooter allegedly told police that one of the men looked at him and asked, "What?". The accused shooter responded, "I'm not talking to you," according to the affidavit.

A moment later the same man again asked the accused shooter, "What?," and again he responded, "I'm not talking to you."

But this time, the accused shooter allegedly told police that all of the men stood up and one pulled out a large, black pistol from his waistband, according to the affidavit.

The accused shooter told police that the man with the gun pointed it at him, waited approximately three seconds and began shooting at him, striking him in the left knee.

The accused shooter responded by removing his .40-caliber pistol from his pants pocket at returned fire, firing 4-6 rounds, according to the affidavit.

When police arrived they found a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his neck. He was transported to Hurley Medical Center with a police escort.

A Hurley security officer told the Flint police officer that a second shooting victim from the Evergreen Regency, a 27-year-old man with a gunshot entry wound near his right eye, was also at the hospital, according to the affidavit.

After the shooting, the accused shooter said he did not see any of the men he was firing at fall to the ground, according to the affidavit. The suspected shooter then fled into an apartment in the complex.

Police, acting on an anonymous tip, were informed which apartment the accused shooter entered, according to the affidavit.

Authorities took the shooter and a second person at the apartment into custody. The .40-caliber pistol was found in the apartment by police, according to the affidavit.

A fight involving dozens of people then broke out near the back of the complex as police reviewed the scene of the shooting.

Around two dozen police officers from Flint, Burton, Michigan State Police and the Genesee County Sheriff's Department were called to the scene to bring the situation under control.

The accused shooter has previous convictions of possession of a short-barreled shotgun and carrying a concealed weapon.

He is being held in federal custody until a detention hearing May 10.

Bay County deputy pulls over Davison woman, finds pistol and heroin in Jeep

BAY CITY, MI — A routine traffic stop has resulted in a 22-year-old Davison woman being charged in Bay County with firearm- and heroin-related felonies.

The morning of April 19, a Bay County Sheriff’s deputy was parked in a median on Interstate 75 when he noticed a Jeep Grand Cherokee heading north at 40 mph. The deputy also heard a report from Bay County Central Dispatch advising police to be on the lookout for a Jeep that had been swerving and traveling slowly, court records show.

The deputy followed the Jeep as it exited the highway at Pinconning Road, then stopped at a gas station. The deputy made contact with Sarah Joe Cook, the Jeep’s lone occupant, and noted in his report that the vehicle emitted a smell of marijuana.

When the deputy asked Cook where the marijuana was, she handed him a cigarette pack containing five marijuana joints, court records show. Cook then consented to the deputy searching her vehicle, denying that there were any other drugs or weapons present, court records show.

The deputy located a Bryco .380-caliber pistol behind the passenger seat, a pink hat containing a suspected drug, a prescription pill bottle with unknown pills and an electronic cigarette container with a rolled $100 bill and a razor blade inside, court records show.

Cook told the deputy she is a stay-at-home mother and is unemployed due to the effects of traffic crash she was involved in three years prior. Cook said the pistol had been given to her by a friend.

“I know it’s dirty; he took it from a friend,” she told the deputy, according to court records. “I asked him if it was stolen and he said, ‘Yeah.’”

Cook added that the suspected drug was heroin, a narcotic she would snort when in pain. She added she got the heroin and the gun from the same person. The pills in the bottle were methadone, which she was taking in an effort to get off heroin, she told the deputy.

Cook voluntarily appeared for her arraignment in Bay County District Court on Friday, May 10. She is charged with single counts of carrying a concealed firearm, a five-year felony, felony firearm, possession of less than 25 grams of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.

Cook is free on bond and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22.

Flint man sentenced to prison in arson-for-hire homicide case
Print Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com By Gary Ridley | gridley@mlive.com The Flint Journal

on May 13, 2013 at 3:30 PM, updated May 13, 2013 at 3:32 PM

FLINT, MI -- A Flint man was sentenced to prison after authorities say he killed the man he was hired to burn down an eastside store with.
Carl D. Holyfield, 35, was sentenced Monday, May 13, by Genesee Circuit Judge Archie Hayman to 18-30 years in prison for second-degree murder and two years, five months to 10 years in prison for arson preparation to burn more than $20,000.

He pleaded no contest to both charges in April.

Holyfield was initially charged with open murder after authorities alleged he killed Timothy Smith Sept. 9, 2012, in the area of Thom and Cook streets. He could have faced life in prison.

Holyfield’s fiancé testified during a September 2012 preliminary exam that Holyfield killed Smith after the two were hired by a Flint store owner to burn down a store on Franklin Avenue.

“He told me he had been offered $500 to burn down Family Dollar,” she testified.

Holyfield and Smith allegedly went to the store around 4:30 a.m. Sept. 9, 2012, and began climbing up the side of the building, State Trooper Detective Tiffany Robbins testified during the exam. Holyfield allegedly told her that he saw lights at a nearby house and car headlights and got scared.

Robbins said Holyfield called to Smith and the two men fled back to Holyfield’s van waiting nearby.

The two men started arguing and Smith wanted to get out of the van to go back and start the fire. A fight ensued and ended with Holyfield allegedly chasing Smith with the van and running him over.

“He told me he ran him over and then turned around and ran him over again,” Holyfield's fiance' testified.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has said that Holyfield also told authorities that he was acting in self defense after Smith allegedly threw a brick through the van's window.
Attorney Michael Ewing, who represented Holyfield in the case, said that his client apologized to Smith's family.

Holyfield has served time in prison for a 2006 Wayne County charge of felony firearm, two counts of delivering/manufacturing less than 50 grams of cocaine from 2003 in Genesee County and a 1999 charge of first-degree home invasion in Wayne County, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.

State records also show he served a probation sentence for felon in possession of a firearm.

Michigan Department of Corrections officials said that Holyfield was on parole at the time of Smith's death.
