FLINT, Michigan — A Michigan State University criminal justice professor said Flint has a "significant homicide problem."

Flint reached 50 homicides, according to the Flint Journal's count. The mayor's office says there is 49.

Jesenia Pizarro, an assistant professor of criminal justice who specializes in homicides, said Flint has a homicide rate of 44.8 per 100,000 residents — nearly four times the 2009 national average.

She said a rate that high as a large negative affect on the community.

"People are going to be scared to go there," she said. "The people that live there are going to want to move out. New businesses will not want to move in."

She said those factors combined could cause a "bigger spiral of decay."

There's no one reason for a high homicide rate, although poverty and social inequality are big factors, she said.

"With the industrial jobs that have been leaving, you almost expect something like (a high homicide rate) to happen," she said.

With s significant number of these muders occuring in the north end, why are we spending over a half million fixing houses in the 600 blocks of Foss, Alma, Lorado, and Ruth. Some of these blocks are nearly abandoned.

FLINT, Michigan — Flint City Council President Delrico Loyd said something has to change when it comes to homicides.

Flint reached 50 homicides after it was announced that a suspicious death involving a man found in a vacant home was ruled a homicide.

He said there have been "50 deaths too many."

"We can't let this stigma stick with us," he said. "We got to get serious about talking to families and loved ones and say 'we can't be having this.' We can't be talking about change, we have to do the change."

Here's a thought provoking question. Why doesn't the Mott Foundation direct some of the MILLION$ they give to the City of Flint each year into the F.P.D.? Here's an eye opening article/interview.

Word is Ridgeway White has made major investments in some new properties on Saginaw Street and Ridgeway is also involved in the Michigan School for the Deaf project.

North end groups continue to complain about downtown and don't want to hear about the major private source cash infusion that is developing downtown. Lots of anti-arab sentiments being voiced too. The Arab speaking store owners have small stores and are usually family run. critics complain that the stores allegedly don't hire blacks and take urban earned money to the suburbs.
