the Flint School Board needs to get their heads out of their a** and let powers have this building. It would benefit East Village, along with Mott and the Cultural Center.

What is happening here, I think, is the good people of the School Board and the good people of the National Educational Association have been working together . Yes, they do see schools like Powers as a threat to the idea of "public education" . Yet they good people of the NEA can not seem to be able to explain as to why student from schools like Powers do better and get a better education.
Now of course an explanation right off the bat, one the liberals won't like, is that typically people who send their kids to schools like Powers are A.) Better educated themselves B.) Since the parents are better educated they tend to earn more ,and C.) That people who are better educated and earning a good living TEND to value education more and instill that value of education in their children. Or ( to cause more howls of protest from the NPR listening crowd) simply put, IT TAKES PARENTS TO RAISE CHILDREN ,NOT A VILLAGE.
Getting back to the building formerly known as Central High School, GIVE POWERS THE DAMNED BUILDING FREE AND CLEAR ,, sheesh ! If the people who direct things at Powers don't already have another location already purchased GIVE THEM THE DAMNED building on Crapo in Flint ,Michigan. Take the decison making chore away from these morons and hand the building over the Powers people. The building is huge, so Powers may not need the whole place but that shouldnt be an issue. They can share that buidling (s) with other schools, Section the buliding up in parts, have each school have their own set of doors for their entrances. The field house ( the gym) has one huge gym which can be sectioned off , and had an auxillary gym on the second floor . The field house also housed the pool, which may or may not be useable now, but still it probably can be put into good order pretty easily. I think Powers would find having the Public Library next door to be an attractive feature. As would having the Art Center , Mott and the FIA so close by would be really attractive I would think to the Powers administration. And the track, just next next to field house ,is still ( or was , last time I was there) in decent shape. The bulding had one elevator , so that may be an issue but not totally without a solution.
Also , for a historical connection, the namesake of Powers, Luke M.Powers, used to run St. Matthews Catholic school in downtown Flint. so being closer to downtown could be seen as sort of a homecoming .

I agree let them have it. The clowns at the Flint Schools Administration Builiding and the Flint School Board can't even have a civilized meeting let alone rehab a school

Renovate and re open ? Do you expect funding for this sometime this year or next ? Sometime befor the critters run the halls? What is the cost ( to us and to our children) to heat the school as it stands empty now ? Has Powers been contacted ( or a response made to inquiries ) so that a viability study could be made ? To quote Shakespeare " I smell all horsepiss, and my nose is in great indignation."

My thought is that this should be done while the property is still saleable. There is a window of opportunity that may close (if it has not already done so). Let's put the building and the funds to use.The education of our children.

Powers people are Catholic, of course they drink a lot! Holy Rosary has a beer tent during their fall festivals for crying out loud. I think being a drinker is a prerequisite for being a Catholic. So if drinking a lot for you FlintBeerMan is a requirement them Powers people are in like Flynn!

Since I'm Catholic & don't drink, I must be the exception to the rule.

Must be , most Catholics I know are big drinkers. I have ex-Catholic parents and hell, their familes bended elbows with the best of them. Seen priests get hammered to the gills after family funerals. Sure there may be non drinking Catholics ,but they sure are the minority. Good for you Dave! But the Powers people I knew drank like fiends and used cocaine enough to rival wannabe supermodels after they gorged themselves .
