It's too bad that school board gig doesn't pay much or I might try and talk you into that for the 100th time. Sad

How are things out at Crossroads over all Tegan?

well, my job now is actually a seasonal job for the Genesee County Parks - Assistant Crossroads Village Program Coordinator - so I would be getting laid off for a month in Febraury regardless. Unfortunately, they are eliminating the position, so there is nothing for me to get rehired to;

Andi, my masters will be in historic preservation (one more semester! yay!) my job at Crossroads Village really didn't pertain to preservation very much, so this is probably a great opportunity for me. MI SHPO just posted a job for a history specialist in Lansing, so maybe it will work in my favor.

Things are pretty good. We had a great 2008 season, especially Halloween and Christmas. Next year we have a lot of great programs planned, more radio shows, and some new things happening.

Good Point ..Kids are my First job!
Used to volunteer countless hours at the school.
100's of community people used to volunteer at the host program in Flint schools. Or at other worthwhile endeavors like crossroads village, neighborhood watches etc.

Now they can't afford to voluteer their time..have to work a second job or suppliment spouses income.

The state of the economy causes less volunteerism, less volunteerism means employees have to cover more bases.

No more trickle down we need to start from the bottom up.

Volunteer 1 or 2 hours somewhere. At a school, be a big brother/big sister or help at a soup kitchen. Mow an empty lot or attend a communty watch group meeting. We can be the change.

We all have two jobs some have three.

Had a neighbor walk around the whole block with his snowblower, cleaned all the sidewalks. What a blessing. Gave me time to do something else like put plastic on my windows which in turn will save me cash on those heat bills.

This also made it safer for kids to make it to bus stops instead of walking in the streets. Safe passage.

Every little gift of time and effort has rewards.
Pay it forward!

Peace,
RAP

The school board gig does give them free meals!!!

Many times I left a full day of work without time to stop for dinner to attend a school board meeting and watch the school board eat better food than kids get for lunches.

Now if they did their homework and came prepared with knowledge on issues on the agenda, some of them came directly from work and deserved to be fed, then it was worth my daughters per pupil funding for their less than $20.00 meal for each committee meeting.

I am joking that running for school board might be worth the free meals.
That is if you put in the time required to be a good school board member.

Peace,
Rap

Why would it take that much time? People like Dave and others seem to put in enough time for half the board.

If you put the right people in charge things shouldn't be so complicated. I think the Flint school board should be more of a turn key operation and not rocket science.

Dave has put in more time at board meetings & committee meetings than all board members current & past .consolidated total.

The people in charge play politics with the board. Admin has things almost in place before it is "run " by the board.
Yet the board takes the heat.

The job of the board is to set policy.

If they get too involved it is said they micro-manage. If they don't pay attention they get snowed by admin.

It takes a long time to learn the ropes to be a boardmember. One of nine..alll need experience and due diligence.

We need a variety of backgrounds on the board. Finance- funding experience- Title I, Divisions -A,B,C,D. State, Fed. ECT.
Social work, education, mental health, M & O, parents, law, character ed. and POLITICS.

You can not expect to just show up at a board meeting, eat your free meal and vote. 20 hours of homework per week and you might be prepared.

pay is $30. per meeting.

Peace,
Rap

It's clear Flint does not have a "turnkey" board operation in place yet but I hink with some key changes things would be a lot simpler for everyone. Having mismanagement does make things harder. I'll have to recheck with some non-Flint board members but I'm pretty sure things aren't as hard in some non mis-managed school districts.
