We need to somehow find a way to speed up the process!

Josh, Carpenter told a friend of ours that Carolyn gave him a list of houses in the 5th ward to be torn down next year - all in the area I mentioned.
Ryan, I know about the long process. A house on the block I grew up on was just torn down after being on the demo list for 14 years. There are 4 more on that block that have been abandoned for over 12 years. Three of the 4 are loaded with black mold - I've looked.

THE Land Bank has one budget and they choose to allocate the majority of resources as they see fit. There are grants, such as the on from Metropolitan Housing which can only be used for specific housing renovations.
Ted, am I to understand that you think it is acceptable for the land Bank to promote development at the cost of maintaining the thousands of properties they have. Metro Housing, Mott Foundation and others brought in specialists last March to discuss selective development and it appears many community development entities are focusing on downtown and the surrounding areas. But that doesn't mean we can totally neglect all other areas of the community and ignore their suffering.
Flint appears to be following a "new urbanism" concept where you start downtown and work outward. Part of that concept is the closing off of unused urban areas so as not to have to provide services in an era of diminishing resources and income. |

If it's an abandoned house, the firemen go into a defensive mode & work to save the houses on either side. The abandoned house is allowed to burn. |

I'm afraid that I am going to have to declare shenanigans!
That's like saying that the City of Flint has one budget. Can ACT51 (major street money) dollars be used to operate the Police Department? NOOOO... but if you spend ACT 51 dollars on roads, that doesn't mean you are diverting if from the Police Department.
If you get a grant from someone that is for one specific use... then you aren't diverting monies from other projects when they use that grant for the specified use.
Am I missing something here.
The Land Bank is not some Messiah that can waive a wand and demolish, instantly, the thousands of homes that need it in the City of Flint. |

Josh- The land Bank declined to allocate funds to maintain or demolish their properties. They took out bond money. That kind of neglect indicates they are not responsive to the needs of Flint residents. How many times have those living near these neglected properties lament their plight. Block clubs and other groups are addressing this lack of care. |

Who is paying for demolition in the City of Flint? I believe that it is the Land Bank.
What did they use the bond money for? I bet it was demolition.
I suppose that it is hard to be responsive to the needs of the community when you have a limited amount of money and the needs are so great. You try to spread that money around which diminishes the visible effect that you have.
To blatantly blame the Land Bank for all of the problems of Flint, is like blaming the Mayor for all of the problems of Flint. It's not right. (I can't believe I just said that lol). When they blunder, blame them for that blunder. Hold them accountable for the mistakes that they make. |

That is the reason most people on this poll feel Dan Kildee is in it for himself. They are slum lords, they don't maintain their shit. |

Josh if one guy owned all the properties the land bank owned, and maintained them like the land bank does what would you call that guy?
I would call him a slum lord a.k.a speculator

I hold the land bank directly responsible for the sneering rep that told me to board & mow their properties in my neighborhood. |

In fairness... the properties weren't in the greatest shape when they got them.
Certainly there needs to be a better solution than we currently have, but absent some windfall of cash... we're stuck with what we have. At least with this system we are dealing with one owner rather than a thousand individual owners.
Still frustrating. |

So we are all frustrated, so lets come up with a solution rather than bitching about it... Lets brain storm and go to the land bank with our ideas.[b]

They should try and sell more of their properties. If you did as good a job of selling houses and properties as the land bank I think your employer would fire you ASAP. I think they should go mainstream and hire a realtor.
I also disagree with some of their rationale. If a house is worse $1 than sell it for a dollar instead of paying $7 or $8 grand to demolish it.
Morally I don't think it's right for the government to profit off of people's misfortune. I don't have a problem with Dan Kildee speeding up the foreclosure process but it doesn't seem right for the government to profit from people's misfortune so they can fund a nice new office and throw some dollars downtowwn.
I think the reality is Flint and Genesee county needs to adjust to being a low cost center and not try and inflate housing prices that are collapsing anyways. |

You are on channel 17 watching the council meetings. Surely you know that demolition is from a variety of funds including a CDBG and MSHDA match. Not that much demolition is going on and that is because the land bank is not providing as much funding as they did before. That is the reason demolition crews were laid off. |

I understand City of Flint funding very well. I also understand that during the last several years, the Land Bank has provided a great deal of funding for demolition within the City of Flint.
MSHDA money is something that has come along, in a significant way, in the last year through the Cities of Promise. Through CDBG, demolition is only allowed to be a certain percentage of the overall grant thereby limiting the amount that can be used.
Crews have been laid off because of mismanagement within the department by the administration. There is an $8 million deficit and cuts have to be made. |
