I'm in the process of buying a 1973 Cadillac Ambulance that has not been driven or started in several years. My question is: What would be the proper procedure for starting this engine for the first time and please tell meof all the precautions one shoudl take.

Thanks.

Richard

New fuel, new oil, visual inspection of the motor and check for mouse or chipmunk nests in the aircleaner. Very Happy What Andi said. Laughing

Whatever you do, dump the gas, drop the tank, pour in 3 or 4 gallons of new gas, slosh it around & dump it. Even better would be to steam clean it until water runs out clear, then let it dry thoroughly. A neighbor ruined a pretty nice Cavalier by putting gas in it he got out of a car that had been sitting for 10 years!

Also, look over the wiring. Mice like to eat the insulation.
I think I'd replace the transmission fluid, too.

Was it 1973 or 1974 vehicles that were first to be able to use UNLEADED FUEL.
I think 1973's Required LEADED FUEL . If So u will need to add the Leaded Additive to each Gallon of Gas. or Have the Heads worked on to Change The Valves and SEATS.

Look at the Exhaust System... If it HAS a Cat Converter, It is ok to use Unleaded Fuel ( Todays fuels) If No Cat, Then you must use Leaded Fuels or Have the Engine Heads Redone .

That's right. Karl died sometime last year, I think. I had several older cars that did not have the converter and used unleaded gas with no issues. I will need to check this out. Thanks.

By the way, I did get this ambulance but was not able to pick it up last Saturday. Guess what, no keys to be found. I had to have a locksmith come out last Monday and make me new keys so that is done. Now it has to have the front end jacked up and move it over a foot or two to get it away from the fence or the front fender would get damaged.
We'll get it sooner or later. This picture was teken last Saturday and I think it is the best picture so far.
