Land must have been in an Indian Trust before a Certain Date of Which I do not remember that date ..This was to Stop the Indians from Shopping for land to expand Reservations .
No Indian Tribe Has Land in Genesee County in Such a Trust .
The Burial grounds may lead To one tho... But Sacrat grounds cannot be built upon. This is wHy the Old Rest area east of I-75 and Between Birch Run and Bridgeport were Closed and Torn Down...it was found out the land was an indian Burial Grounds .
Just last week A deal was made with Congress.
It seems that The WHITE MAN was suppose to Hold Upper mich land in Trust for the indians, But the White man sold it To Other White Men. This consist of 7 counties in the upper part of Mi..
Well anyways The Sault Tribe Traded that treaty rights for LAND in WAYNE COUNTY . just last week. Now the White man in the upper mi, Have CLEAR title to their Land .
This is wHY the Casino is Going to be Built in Romulus. On the land the Tribe was Awarded ..
By the way... The Sault Tribe is in trouble just like Flint is... I think the deficiet is 8 million $$$$ We have no money for a new Casino. Right Now .
Hopefully the Tribe will not become so Poor that They Will Have Stop giving Me My Money !!
Also if It were not For the Chippewa's wiping out the Sauks Indians on the Banks of The Flint river Where Flushing parks now sit, It would have taken longer for any Treaties to be signed .[/quote]

Of the Indians who roamed southern Genesee county the Sauks were the most numerous, their domain extending to the headwaters of the Shiawassee river, in Oakland county near Davisburg. They had small encampments or villages at different points on the river and on some of the lakes. The teeming hunting grounds of the Sauks led to inter tribal wars. The Chippewas (Ojibwas) seeing the prosperity of the Sauks, held council with the Ottawas of the north and formed an expedition against the Sauks to occupy their hunting grounds. The principal Sauk village on the Saginaw river was attacked and the people tomahawked. The Sauks fought back but were defeated and massacred, after which the invading army destroyed villages along the Shiawassee, Titawabassee and Cass rivers. A desperate battle was fought on the bank of the Flint river about a half mile south of what is now Flint. The Sauk suffered a severe defeat and retreated down the river to a point near Flushing, where another battle was fought and lost. Bands of the invaders scoured the valleys of the Shiawassee and the Cass routing and overthrowing the Sauks, only a remnant of whom escaped. After the Sauks had been crushed, the victorious allies did not immediately settle the conquered territory, but held it as common ground for their hunting parities. |

WASHINGTON, DC (AP) -- The Supreme Court agreed Monday to resolve a dispute over the federal government's ability to take land into trust for American Indian tribes.
Indian rights groups fear that the case involving the Narragansett Tribe in Rhode Island could undermine tribal land across the country. The justices will hear the case in the fall.
The state argued that a 1934 federal law prevents the government from taking land into trust for tribes recognized after the law took effect, unless Congress specifically authorized it. The Narragansetts became a federally recognized tribe in 1983.
The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston rejected the state's claim in July.
At issue is whether a 31-acre lot in Charlestown purchased by the Narragansetts should be subject to Rhode Island law, including a prohibition on casino gambling, or whether the parcel should be governed by tribal and federal law.
The dispute dates to 1991, when the Narragansetts purchased the land to build an elderly housing complex, which remains incomplete.
The state objected when the tribe asked the U.S. Department of the Interior to take the land into federal trust, which would place it largely under tribal and federal control.
State leaders fear the Narragansetts want to build a casino on the site. Casino are banned under state law.
"The paramount issue of state sovereignty is the potential that this could open the door to a casino, at least a crack, over the objections of Rhode Island voters," said Attorney Joseph Larisa Jr., who represents the town of Charlestown.
Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Thomas has said his tribe intends to complete tie unfinished elderly housing complex on the property, but could also consider other economic development options. He has not ruled out building a casino on the land.

I think a casino in Flint is a terrible idea. How many people have a disposable income to spend in them ? How many people in the area are on some form of assitance ? Can they afford to frequent a casino? And with the city being so bad in regards to crime, who is going to opt for Flint when they can go to far safer places like Mt. Pleasant and other places farther north? I can almost see another Autoworld scenario or Raddison scenario developing .
Scrap the idea of the casino I say. Let the colleges and universities grow. Clubs, stores and other things will slowly develop to meet the demands and wishes of the students. The colleges are here, let's build around this theme. |
