I'm thinking about making the decline of National Amusements' Michigan operations the subject of the next WaterWinterWonderland.com Flinn's Journal. National Amusements has been closing underpeforming theaters in recent years throughout Michigan completely pulling out of areas including the Pontiac, Sterling Heights, Grand Rapids and Lansing areas to give four examples. I previously wrote about National Amusements at http://waterwinterwonderland.com/flinn090105.asp What do you think?

I think a lot of it's pricing. It's a lot cheaper to wait a bit, then rent the movie or get it via cable or satellite pay per view. For the price of a movie, popcorn & a pop, I can watch 3 at home.

Naw, its all about the latest and greatest!! The two movie theatres that are being closed are worn out and old. People want atmosphere, comfortable seats, good service, both theatres lacked that. People are flocking to the new Grand Blanc Theatre now.

On a personal level I prefer to wait for a movie to hit the video stores or better yet, just wait until it's released and but it. I hate going to the movies mainly because of rude people. Some people just don't get it and think they are in their home and can talk and make as much noise as they want.
But, when we do go it has to be a place that is up to date and has theater seating so you do not have to attempt to look over someone else's head.

This seems like the perfect time to bring back the Capitol theater. We have two local theaters closing down, due to there being better options out there in Trillium and Showcase West. If they throw a few dollars into the Capitol theater just to get it up and running, and put unique films, such as independent and foreign films and advertise properly they can bring in some positive income for the capitol and then you can work on the full renovation.

I went through the tour that Flint Club held of the Capitol Theater during the Back to the Bricks and it's a shame that such a great commodity isn't being utilized. Hearing stories from people who worked there or went on their first date at the Capitol was great. The building is structurally sound and still has great character to it.

It would be nice to see it opened and used again.
