Community leaders in Flint want to crack down on the trash some landlords are leaving along streets in many neighborhoods. Members of City Council and the NAACP announced Wednesday they are working with state lawmakers to design some new, tougher eviction laws. Seventh Ward Councilman Matt Shlinker says the Council wants to make it illegal for landlords to leave property cluttering sidewalks. State law allows landlords to dump a tenant’s property on the public right of way. Shlinker says that rule conflicts with City blight ordinances.

The City of Flint allows landlords to leave eviction property on the side of the road for 2 days before getting a warning. If it's still there, City crews will clean it when they get time. That means neighbors could be stuck looking at the garbage for days, even weeks.

Flint code inspectors say they are getting and inspecting dozens of calls regarding trash and blight everyday. If you have a complaint you can call the Code Enforcement Office, or the Mayor’s Complaint Line at (810) 424-6247.
