Bishop receives $4.4 million for intermodal project

FLINT — Bishop Airport has been awarded $4.4 million from the Michigan Aeronautics Commission to develop an intermodal freight hub expected to create up to 200 jobs.
The freight hub will be a distribution center that takes advantage of the area’s transportation network. The project is expected to improve safety conditions and increase commercial air traffic.

Intermodal shipping involves two or more forms of transportation in a single trip. Those connections include highway, air, rail and maritime.

The first phase of the project is expected to be finished in 2009.

The Michigan Department of Transportation said the project combines federal, state, local and private money to bring in more than $60 million in new construction to Bishop Airport.

The grant includes $4 million in airport safety and protection money and $440,000 in local funding.

“The new freight hub will equip Bishop International Airport to better handle large containers of freight and physically separate its freight operations from the passenger terminal,” said Terry Everman, chairman of the Michigan Aeronautics Commission.

“This provides the airport with the added benefit of relieving the security concerns related to having two operations in such close proximity.”

The industry views intermodal transportation as a way to increase productivity and efficiency.

Sounds like a great idea. It worked for the Shipping, Rail and Trucking companies.

I don't see it as a Major player based on the High cost of Air Frieght. compared to rail or even trucking. But, this could be a nitche that needs to be filled. And why not Flint? Even though there isn't anything here to ship to. High tech is just down the road in the suburbs of Detroit. That's close enough.
