Today, over 400,000 signatures were presented in support of the protection of marriage. This citizens initiative came as a result of both a wave of national attention to marriage and Governor Granholm's unwillingness to support the defense of an institution so fundamental to our way of life.
Looking at this issue on a national level, Chairman DeVos said, "President Bush has been clear in his support for marriage, while John Kerry has left enough holes in his position to sink an aircraft carrier. This is not an issue that can be answered with John Kerry's word games. The people of Michigan need a President who reflects their views."
The initative will appear on the November 2nd ballot. It was supported by a nearly unanimous vote of the delegates to the Michigan Republican State Convention this year.
Americans celebrated our 228th birthday yesterday with all the patriotism and enthusiasm we have come to expect. People gathered together to watch barbeque, watch fireworks, and remember our country's first days of freedom from oppression and tyranny.
It is important, even as we remember our own Independence Day, that we keep in our minds the sacrifices and acts of heroism being performed daily by our men and women in uniform. They are the ones who daily put their lives on the line to defend our freedom and independence. Our continued thanks go out to each and every one of them.
Additionally, we should feel proud that, in making our country safer from terrorism, Americans have helped to bring the birthright of freedom we celebrate now to families in Afghanistan and Iraq.
