Like I said, I have to be 100% sure it's a knife before I pull it.

I wish life was so neat and clean that you knew anything 100%.

I don't want the responsibility of taking a life. I just don't. But also, I am not tested in those kinds of situations. I've never faced any real danger, I honestly don't know what I would do.

Once as my mom and her friend were leaving U of M Flint, a guy approached them with a knife and demanded their purses. Her friend hesitated for a moment and the guy moved like he was going to smack her in the face. She (my mom's friend) had just had brain surgery, and something about that made my mom react, and she decided to try and hit him with her purse. He was so thrown off that he started to run, and my mom actually started chasing him. She was going to beat this guy's ass (and she probably could, heh heh).

In any case, was that the smartest thing to do? Probably not. I don't know. But hearing story after story of people who are faced with these odd situations and take an action they would never have predicted, I must seriously consider my own fitness to render judgment. Even if I were trained for handling firearms, I think it's a risky business.

I have another friend, btw, who was attacked as she returned to her car at the mall. The guy was attempting to sexually assault her, and she said the only thought going through her mind was not to spill her ice cream cone in her car.

Anyway, I don't begrude you your confidence in your own decision-making abilities, but please do understand that, I agree, guns are not for everyone, and I have to believe I'm one of that group.

Human survival is the most basic of instincts. When the addrenalin and the tunnel vision kicks in you will probably do what ever you can to survive (even if it means dropping your ice cream cone) sorry I couldnt resist. Wink Was your friend able to escape the sexual predator?

Yes, when she finally realized what was happening she escaped.

I think about this kind of stuff all the time. Yes, your instinct might kick in, but too late?

For instance, my dad constantly has reminded us since we were teenagers that if a man has a gun or a knife, even at your neck, in a mall parking lot, your odds are WAY better of surviving if you just run RIGHT THEN. Chances are they will be panicked by that action, and won't attempt to shoot or chase you. Even if they did, chances are you would be wounded but, at the very least, you have possibly avoided a bind-torture-kill type scenario.

That is what haunts me. I don't mind the idea of dying because of some vigilante shooting in the mall, or even getting shot in the back or stabbed while trying to flee, but I cannot tolerate the possibility of being kept and tortured for days, weeks, or months.

I'm afraid if I carried a weapon, I would be paralyzed to use it.

If you were my daughter I would have trained you at a young age to fight back, and prepared you to use and carry the legal options avaliable to you. Most of the street scum out there are cowards and pick on only those they presume to be weak and helpless. Dont be a victim. Ya only get one shot at life dont let some scumbag fresh off parole lowlife cut it short. Only the foolish liberals expect a 110lb female to go hand to hand with a 220lb rapist. Think about it. This is my grandaughter learning the proper use of a firearm.
