City Administrator Peggy R. Cook said Tuesday she is working with city officials to repay about $27,000 in disputed back pay.

Cook was one of seven remaining current and former City Council members who have been fighting a court order to repay the money, but recently lost an appeal. The city has given the officials two weeks to return the money or face court action to collect, although an attorney for the officials has said the case will be appealed.

Cook said she still believes she deserved the money, which were pay cuts by former emergency financial manager Ed Kurtz during the state takeover. She said the decision was political, adding that Kurtz gave raises to other city officials at the same time.

The council voted to give itself the back pay after the takeover ended last year, but the state Attorney General Mike Cox sued, arguing the council violated a state constitutional provision that bars retroactive pay for public officials.

Cook joins two other officials - Council President Darryl E. Buchanan and 9th Ward Councilman Scott Kincaid - who have recently planned or committed to repay.

What a Crock! Kurtz came in and gave a bunch of worthless positions that haven't done a thing for the city of Flint in years a raise. Then cut's the pay of the whistle blowers that turned in the former Mayor for running the city into bankruptcy. That's just plain wrong to expect people to work and not pay them for their work. Then give people raises for not doing their jobs. Then we fired the Council that fixed Flint's problems. What a great city to live in.
