Just before noon today, Flint Mayor Don Williamson announced the city of Flint is making a hefty investment into the redevelopment of the massive Buick City site.
Williamson, and newly-elected City Council President Darryl Buchanan, presented a $100,000 check to the Flint-Genesee Economic Growth Alliance. That money is to be used to market the old Buick City land.
The former factory site is comprised of about 250 acres and is one of the largest sites of its kind in the nation. The site has been vacant for years.
Williamson and others hope to redevelop the site by attracting several companies to build on the land.
The check will help the growth alliance get the word out about what Flint, and the Buick City site, have to offer when compared to other locations.
"They don't have a road system like we have. They don't have a regional airport like we have. They don't have a cultural center like we have. They don't have four higher-educational institutions like we have," said Ed Donovan, from the growth alliance. "So you start listing those off and companies all of a sudden say, 'that's not the Flint we've heard about.' It's a different kind of Flint and we're going to take that message to them."
Donovan says he and his group will work with the mayor and council to develop a site plan for the old Buick City site and hope to have something for the public in the next 30 days.
The money, according to Williamson, came from a surplus in last year's city budget.
