Monday night, Flint's new City Council wasted no time getting to work. Hours after a ceremonial swearing in, council members passed a key item that had been blocked by the previous council for months.

The first call of order was to elect a council president. Longtime Councilman Darryl Buchanan was a favorite to win, and he received the support he needed to fill that seat.

New faces and new titles make up what some say is an improved Flint City Council.

With a vote of 6-3 in favor of his appointment, Buchanan proudly took his seat as council president. Newcomer Sheldon Neeley accepted his new role as second in command.

After opening the floor for public comment, the council quickly got down to business. One of the first items discussed was funding for the law department, which sits just under $10.

Council members moved quickly to approve more than $1 million in funding for the city attorney's office.

And one of the bigger issues taken up was the mayor's consolidated plan for more than $5 million in federal block grants.

The previous council blocked it for five months, but with a vote, the new council approved it in just a matter of minutes.

Block grants will assist local non-profit groups and the city in public services, housing rehabilitation and shelters, just to name a few.

Earlier Monday, all of the city department heads sat in on the council committee meetings. That was a rare occurrence with the previous council, but Flint Mayor Don Williamson says it will become a standard.
