This one involves a $6,000 vote for a fence at the Oak Business Center and plans for the mayor to put a police impound lot at the site.

Cathy Shafran had the story.

The Oak Business Center has been known for decades as an incubator building where start-up businesses could get a start, sharing basic fees.

For months, the tenants here have been watching a fence go up on the back of the property and hearing rumors that plans were afoot to move an impound lot.

Now the council shares their concerns.
"This was supposed to be for new businesses to start up and people are being turned away from starting new businesses and not telling people what's going on," said Matt Hall.

Hall who's small powder coating company works out of the south end of Oak Business Center, says he's been watching work on a fence on the north end of the property for months.

He was told there was even work started on a police mini station. But he never received any official word.

Flint Council President Johnnie Coleman began sharing Hall's concerns this week when he received last month's minutes of an Economic Development Committee meeting.

Coleman says it was at an EDC meeting he had no knowledge of that Flint Mayor Don Williamson and three other members approved $6,000 for work on a fence that will be used by the police to store impounded cars.

"That's never been voted on by the council to have that as a place for storage anyway, but to go ahead and pay for stuff out of EDC money before it happens, and then get the EDC people to vote for it, that's another violation of what he continues to do," Coleman said.

Coleman says the council will ask the proper federal authorities to investigate the mayor for spending the federal EDC dollars without proper approval, having only four members voting, instead of 5 members needed for a quorum.

We have asked the mayor and his spokespeople for reaction. There's no word yet.
